Vance makes his debut as VP on the international stage at a high-stakes AI summit in Paris

PARIS — JD Vance stepped onto the world stage this week for the first time as U.S. vice president, using a high-stakes AI summit in Paris and a security conference in Munich to amplify Donald Trump’s aggressive new approach to diplomacy. The 40-year-old vice president, who was just 18 months into his tenure as a senator before joining Trump’s ticket, is expected, while in Paris, to push back on European efforts to tighten AI oversight while advocating for a more open, innovation-driven approach. The AI summit has drawn world leaders, top tech executives, and policymakers to discuss artificial intelligence’s impact on global security, economics, and governance. High-profile attendees include Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing, signaling Beijing’s deep interest in shaping global AI standards.

So glad to have a VP who is intelligent and cogent enough to handle complex issues and can do more than giggle about yellow school buses.

I love the video of our Vice President landing with his wife and children. It's heartwarming to see a normal family, jammies and all.

Was this the meeting described as a "brutal ideological assault?"
Listeners were described as stunned and shocked.
We could use some European ideology here.
Europe hates Trump's bombast and bullying already, and now they realize his #2 is a minimally polished clone.
So embarrassed for America.

This statement is embarrassing - Europe doesn't hate Trump - liberal European leaders do not like the fact we finally have a President with a backbone that is making them hold to their agreements.

His Harvard trained Vice President was firm, lucid and well versed in his address. He spoke eloquently and plainly.

Constitutional scholar Jonathan Turley praised Vice President JD Vance for criticizing German censorship laws during his speech to the Munich Security Conference, where the vice president called out organizers for banning both far-left and far-right wing parties. Turley also reacted on "America's Newsroom," Tuesday to a CBS host blaming the Holocaust on free-speech.

I don't think they hate him - they just think he's an idiot. That's per my European friends.

They don’t think he is an idiot, just do not like him holding them accountable for agreements they already signed

That’s per my six trips to Europe a year and dozens of contacts and friends in the EU.

While I agree that the Vice President's speech on German censorship highlights the importance of free speech in democracy, what did the US gain by insulting a close ally? Strengthening the Europe-US alliance would better serve our national security interests than insulting our allies.

While I agree that Europe doesn't spend enough on defense as required by NATO, what benefit is there in insulting our close allies publicly? Couldn't we quietly and diplomatically pressure European leaders to increase their spending instead?

I am wondering what national security benefits the US gains by creating animosity between Europe and the US.

Harvard education?! I thought we were against the elit leftist ivy league people.
Contrary to the earlier poster's comment, Vance went to Yale or, as my Harvard-educated family like to call it, the Community College at New Haven.

But IME, the right loves ivy-educated and media industry elites, when they're on their side.

I was wrong in my post #8. Today, most NATO countries spend 2% or more on defense. President Trump deserves credit for pushing this since 2017. Additionally, Russia's attack on Ukraine was a wake-up call for Europe to take their defense seriously.

There are certain Americans who do not understand geopolitics, and they are present across the entire political spectrum, from the left to the right. This lack of understanding is why some individuals complain with statements such as: "We are not the world's police," "Why are we spending so much money on foreign countries?" and "Why is America at war all the time?" You can't have a rational foreign policy debate with them.

There are Republicans who understand geopolitics and recognize that US power stems from alliances. Historically, they have supported the foreign policies of Reagan, H. Bush, W. Bush, and McCain, which emphasized a strong NATO and a robust US-EU alliance. Currently, it appears that these Republicans, who have long advocated for conservative foreign policy over the past 50 years, are now endorsing President Trump's antagonistic approach towards NATO and Europe.

However, these Republican will not or can’t explain their reasons for supporting President Trump's foreign policy toward NATO. They will not or can’t explain how US antagonistic approach toward NATO and Europe benefits America.

And Obama deserves credit for pushing them prior to 2017. Pres. Obama even got NATO nations to pledge to increase their military spending to at least the minimum required.

Yes, President Obama deserves credit. So do Presidents Bush, Clinton, Reagan, and all the way back to the inception of NATO. Every US president encouraged NATO to spend money.

But President Trump is in office today and he get the credit. That is how politics works.

It should be noted that previous presidents, prior to President Trump, quietly and diplomatically urged NATO to increase their defense spending. Previous presidents did not insult or humiliate NATO leaders on the world stage because they understood that a strong NATO, regardless of defense spending percentages, is vital for US national security and global stability.

President Trump received credit for pressuring other NATO countries to increase their defense spending. However, the manner in which President Trump achieved this was disgusting and damaging. While NATO countries may have increased their defense spending, the approach taken by President Trump strained relationships within NATO, particularly with the United States. The damage President Trump inflicted on NATO may take 20 to 30 years to repair, if NATO survives his presidency. Unfortunately, President Trump and many of his supporters focus only on American spending without understanding geopolitics or the consequences of a weakened or non-existent NATO.

First, there are European countries that hold their agreements since they joined NATO. Poland is an example.
Second, even before Trump announced he would run for a second presidency, many European countries made efforts to increase their defense budget. Germany has in 2024 fulfilled the 2%-agreement.
So your sentence is a blatant lie.
His Harvard trained Vice President was firm, lucid and well versed in his address. He spoke eloquently and plainly.
But he said [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]. Eloquent and plain [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse].

There are indeed some problems regarding freedom of speech in some parts of Europe. But the examples Vance mentioned ware not the most important ones. He should have addressed the case of Hungary - but the Hungarian democtator Orban is a friend of Putin. Vance did not even think about the limits of free speech on X, where criticism of Musk is not allowed (part of the obligations by the European Digital Service Act is a possibility for users to complain about their deleted postings.

But even if you think Vance pointed at the right guys for »censorship« - is this more dangerous than the espionage by drones, destruction of internet cables, computer hacking, murderings and so on done by a country that has no freedom of speech at all (Russia)?
where the vice president called out organizers for banning both far-left and far-right wing parties.
We Germans know what may happen if right-wing parties are not stopped. And it were the Americans who taught us to ban the German Communist party …
Turley also reacted on "America's Newsroom," Tuesday to a CBS host blaming the Holocaust on free-speech.
In Germany, You are not allowed to lie that there was no Holocaust. Is this a problem? It has been forbidden for decades.

It is also forbidden to show Nazi symbols, this is the continuation of an order by the Joint Allied Command on occupied Germany in 1945. Only a Nazi would criticize that.

This statement is embarrassing - Europe doesn't hate Trump - liberal European leaders do not like the fact we finally have a President with a backbone that is making them hold to their agreements.
Try listening to the BBC World News via your favourite podcast app.
You'll realise that behind the normal, adult "realpolitik-friendly" speech (which Trump and Vance UTTERLY failed to do in their own Oval Office the other day with Zelenskyy) - there's a deep loathing of having to do anything with the orange man. America, yes. The orange man? It's worse than sighing with resignation. It's face-slapping agitation - wondering if you're actually awake and that latest atrocity actually happened? It's wondering how so many Americans actually let themselves vote for him? It's a deep shock, an epistemological, existential moment of dread.

They let HIM back in the White House?
Oh no - on no oh no oh no!

Feb 14 after Trump called Putin without Zelenskyy (2 minutes in.)
On Russia: "Why are we giving them EVERYTHING THEY WANT before we've even negotiated? It's appeasement - and it's never worked!"
Also - the BBC showed how Putin LOVED Trump calling him! How they are going to be best buddies!
"To many western nations, Vladimir Putin is a pariah. To Donald Trump - he's a partner!"

(Think Hitler going into the Sudetenland, then Czechoslovakia, then Poland!)

Then Vance LECTURED the EU on 'free speech'!
This is how that went down.

That speech by JD Vance was made in Munich just a week before the German election. His barely coded call for the AfD to be allowed into government caused shockwaves in Germany and in the conference hall of Munich, where I witnessed the reaction of the crowd. It also posed very profound questions for those Germans who are committed to their country’s long-standing alliance with America.

Oh the irony! He sounded like a whiny high-school debate team member going off topic. They were there to discuss how to contain RUSSIA'S WESTERN LAND GRAB TOWARDS NATO - and instead Vance is there whining that he wanted his besties to be allowed on the debate team in another school! Here's the thing. This is GERMANY! Does he not get that no other party will ever form government with the AFD - will ever negotiate or participate in such an atrocity. They are literally dog-whistling to descendants of the actual NAZIS!

What on earth was Vance thinking?
That they wanted Germany to get as harsh with refugees and irresponsible on the world stage as America? That they wanted Germany to go back in time to 1938? Good one Vance - great talk!

As for democracy - how about America opening up to other parties? Oh the irony that Vance DARED to lecture the EU on democracy?

MORE PARTIES = CLEARER POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES = MORE OPTIONS TO VOTE FOR = MORE DEMOCRACY!
Many EU countries have proportional representation and more political parties than the USA's entrenched duopoly! In Australia we also have more parties. It means our "Greens" can be distinguished from our "Labor" party (which is like your Democrats.) See - when you only have 2 parties - the "Greens" would be in the Democrats somewhere - saying quite outrageously communist things. On the other hand, white nationalist lurk in the alt-right wings somewhere. Each party can point at the extremes in the other. It makes people more fearful and paranoid - and yet the voters are also robbed of their choice!

So you tell me - who has more democracy again?:doh:

His Harvard trained Vice President was firm,
Yeah - in a completely OFF-TOPIC anti-EU rant!
Again - back to high school debating.
If this rant were delivered in a high school debate team - it would have failed.
It was off-topic and not answering the question.
With all Vance's legal training - did he not cover the bit about 'answering the question'?

lucid and well versed in his address. He spoke eloquently and plainly.
Being able to speak the English language is not an especially high bar? Or maybe it is if you're comparing Vance to the word salads your President blurts out without thinking! Trump's word salads make world leaders wince and look away.
EG: "Raw earths!" I doubt Vance would have said THAT! Vance is kind of smart - and Christian Philosopher William Lane Craig has stated that he read a philosophy paper Vance delivered that was intelligent and nuanced.

But he has succumbed to Trumpism. You would not KNOW he was smart by that off-topic offensive rant in Munich.

It really seems America has 'checked out' and gone AWOL.
Yay! Vance want's the brown shirts back!
I mean - really?

This Chart is not the whole picture. You have to add the aid for the Ukraine, for every Cent given to them is a means to stop Putin, who wants to destroy first Ukraine, then NATO and third USA.

Only an idiot would not support the Ukraine - or a Russian agent.

Helmut - I hope this isn't offensive - but I found it funny. (My comments below.)

1741994764808.png

Yes - there are no misunderstandings!

IF it is required to go through Poland on your way to defending Ukraine with the latest kit - no worries!

IF it ends up with NATO against Russia - it was probably inevitable - and I hope the USA realises how what goes around, comes around globally. And tries to defend NATO and force the Russian President or economy to back down.

But if they push the big red button - oh my oh my! Apocalypses are one of my favourite Sci-Fi tropes - but also my least favourite page on my blog when discussing it actually happening in reality! The latest science about how bad the nuclear winter would get is just. Messed. Up!

First - why didn't he go hang out in airports? That's where more illegal immigrants arrive in the USA - but because it's disperses within your borders - it doesn't make as good a photo op as some imaginary 'border force' that's going to save you from all the ... planes.

Second - why the border?

Do you know what Kamala did to help alleviate immigration?

Sure - when Biden was first elected - word that a kinder President spread. There was a post-election spike in immigration to the US. This happened right when some Central American coffee plantations crashed due to bad weather and hurricanes - 3 years in a row! Gangs did not get their 'coffee tax' (which was actually "protection money" to gangs). So organised crime stole their teenage daughters as 'payment'. The families did not get them back! Imagine how you would feel! I would flee! You would flee to protect your remaining kids!

This and a million stories like it is why people immigrate.

So this first image is Trump’s view of the world. It must be nice to have such a simple view of things. I mean – isn’t that why people vote for him? Look at that! Just build a ‘great big beautiful wall’ and it’s fixed! Preferably dig a moat and ad crocodiles and snakes! (Yes – Trump wanted them to build that!)
image.png

Then there’s Kamala’s view of the world. It's bigger. More complex.
This is actually more like a log of her visits to the source of the problem to try and address it there. Sure – it’s a bigger, more complex view of the world – but nobody ever thought being President was simple or easy. Oh wait….
image.png

Biden and Kamala had a 3 pronged strategy for reducing illegal immigration and it was starting to work - and reduce immigration to the US.

New York Times – Nov 2024 – 16 minutes.

But oh no. That 'simple' view of the world has come back. It's all about the border. The wall. (And I wonder if Trump is starting to ask them about building a moat again, and filling it with water in the desert and alligators and snakes?)

JD Vance goes and stands on the border and he's somehow MORE than just a figurehead?

Dude - it's a PHOTO OP! He's illustrated what a mere figurehead he is BECAUSE he visited the border!

Third - by the way - immigrants are good for your economy.
