  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That's what you think.
What matters is the perception of the victimized countries.
The victimized countries rethink their "alliance." They become suspicious and walk on eggshells, defensive, on alert, as they gradually pull away and form new alliances.
And they aren't thinking, not for a minute, "Trump's supporters say he's not a bully and they must be right."
Americans have been the victims here of massive illegal immigration and the massive flooding of illegal drugs and fentanyl killing over a hundred thousand Americans a year.

Americans have been the victims here of massive illegal immigration and the massive flooding of illegal drugs and fentanyl killing over a hundred thousand Americans a year.
And it is Americans that are guilty of bringing Fentenyl across the border and making the market for it.

Here are facts:
  • Fentanyl smuggling is ultimately funded by U.S. consumers who pay for illicit opioids: nearly 99 percent of whom are U.S. citizens.
  • In 2021, U.S. citizens were 86.3 percent of convicted fentanyl drug traffickers—ten times greater than convictions of illegal immigrants for the same offense.
  • Over 90 percent of fentanyl seizures occur at legal crossing points or interior vehicle checkpoints, not on illegal migration routes, so U.S. citizens (who are subject to less scrutiny) when crossing legally are the best smugglers.

The Canadian border is less of a problem re fentenyl smuggling.

There’s no indication of any substantial change in the first three months of the 2025 fiscal year (October 2024 through December 2024). Of the 4,537 pounds of fentanyl seized by US border authorities during that period, 10 pounds, about 0.2%, were seized at the Canadian border, while 4,409 pounds, about 97.2%, were seized at the Mexican border.

Canada was willing to make the same agreement back in December. There was no need for the threats and all the anxiety to American companies and the stock market.

  • SEIZURES happen at legal crossing points because that is where they focus. They don't occur on illegal migration routes because CBP doesn't know where all of them are and there aren't enough people to cover them.
  • We don't know how much fentanyl comes in unchecked. All the statistics are from seizures

Ah...the pain you are feeling should give you empathy for the countries Trump is pushing around.
You understand the feeling. The next step is to see how other countries might feel, and how all those angry feelings can destroy alliances and hurt our country.

You do understand, that they will up the price of their products. So they make a profit. So, American consumers lose and pay more. Right?
the tariffs were suspended. why would they up their prices?

"Working" is not getting Mexico and Canada to capitulate to demands. We can call them "working" only if the actions have the desired result. I think we will have to wait and see on that.
yes, that is why tarrifs were suspended not cancelled.

Came here to say exactly this.

They're spinning it as a win, when it's just a reversion to the status quo. The methodology is this: See a problem (real or imagined)-invent 'crisis'-make performative threats of the 'other'-avert 'crisis'-revert to previous arrangements-claim victory against the 'other'.

The net result has been zero change, except the US' reputation as a reliable partner has taken a huge hit. Don't be surprised if Mexico and Canada start negotiating trade deals with other markets in order to diversify their revenue streams.
It's kind of like when they made Colombia take flown from the US deportees; just like Colombia has done under every president.

Just a threat of tariffs will cause prices to rise. If an exporter knows companies are making a run on products to beat the tariffs, the price of those products are bound to increase.

After Trump was elected - why didn't they offer during Biden?
There was no need for the threats and all the anxiety to American companies and the stock market.
And did nothing.... - now with a President who has a backbone - they are.

"For now, all of this is speculation, as there's no official word from Volkswagen Group and any tariffs have not been finalized. However, it's easy to see that, given the potential for these increased costs, automakers may considering some dramatic shifts when it comes to where vehicles are made."

With that blurb from the article; automakers, including US ones, understand it just makes sense to build product in the country where they sale that product the best. If anyone travels abroad, you will see overseas US companies with brands of cars they don't even sale in the states. The article is talking about particular cars that sale well in the US. Their companies builds here, our companies build there.

Read the title - especially where it says - to dodge tariffs.

Then read the second sentence in the link -

This, of course, includes quite. a few automobiles. Volkswagen Group’s luxury brand Porsche and Audi would be exposed to these tariffs because they currently have no U.S. production sites; however, as per a Reuters report that cites German business newspaper Handelsblatt, that could soon change.

What you will see is those products not made in Mexico or Canada increase their prices right along with them.

Yes, read the rest. "speculation" with no official word from the manufacturer. Don't get over your skis. Remember what happen with Foxconn. Till they make an official pronouncement, it remains just that. And again, I don't see this is a big deal. It's normal operator procedures.

I just have to laugh. Prices are up so high over the inflation of the last 4 years. and people are worried they may go up a little more

It could be worse. Kamila could have won and the us economy would have collapsed (I am not sure how long we could have survived the way things were going)

Mexico and Canada are SENDING 10,000 soldiers. That means it is about to happen, regardless of what happened during Joe’s regime.

The difference is found in the number of illegal border crossings.

The United States-Mexico border faces several challenges, including illegal border crossings, human trafficking, sex trafficking, drug trafficking. I hope President Trump can solve some of these problem.

But my question is how Canada became part of this problem? Do we have illegal border crossing from our northern neighbor?

Yes.
US citizens are concerned about the price of products, be it worldwide inflation, or Trump induced taxes.
