Some are no doubt born here. As is also found in some other cultures. It's a free country.

My great grandmother, who died in the early 1970s, came to the country in the late 1800s. She only spoke Czech, was a house wife and had 9 children.

She never spoke a word of English.

I don’t know how she survived.

It sounded like she had a rather, for a lack of a better word, isolated life. That was her choice, I guess?

They come to our country to live and refuse to speak our language?

Maybe I would have understood 50 years ago, but not today.
In my experience as an educator, I observe that ESL programs around the country are jammed, with long waiting lists. Still the United States has no official languages, except by tradition and the tradition of Spanish is much older than English. There were already thriving Spanish speaking cities in this country when the little cluster of Pilgrims were starving at Plymouth.

Yes. I’m aware. Unofficially the United States is an English speaking nation.

She probably had a community of some kind. During the late 19th century when German immigration was at it's peak there were many towns in the upper Midwest in which German was the lingua franca, with German newspapers and German as the language of instruction in the public schools.

Correct. Both of my maternal grandparents both spoke Czech and English. My state has the most people of Czech descent per capita, and the little town where I grew up had many people of Czech descent.

My mother is 100% Czech, and my paternal grandmother also had Czech ancestry, so I’m over half.

Vice President JD Vance criticizes U.S. Catholic bishops condemning ICE entering churches and schools

However, it was the church and schools order that drew ire from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Mark. J Seitz, migration committee chairman U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, told CBS News "Many of these policies we see going against the basic tenets of our faith."

Vance, a devout Catholic, sharply rebuked the bishops' condemnation. "Because as a practicing Catholic, I was actually heartbroken by that statement," he said.

Vance told Brennan the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops "has, frankly, not been a good partner in common sense immigration enforcement that the American people voted for."

He said he hopes "as a devout Catholic, that they'll do better."

In response, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said Sunday in a statement, "Faithful to the teaching of Jesus Christ, the Catholic Church has a long history of serving refugees."

Thanks for the info! And yes, I very much believe in helping refugees and immigrants, as a devout Catholic. I can disagree with Vance and that’s ok!

NEW LETTER: EVANGELICAL ORGANIZATIONS URGE ADMINISTRATION TO RESPECT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

The termination of longstanding policy guidance around the engagement of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs (ICE) and Border Protection (CBP) Officers in “sensitive locations,” including churches, schools, and hospitals, raises serious concerns around religious liberty, as this policy will deter people from attending their churches, limiting the Church’s ability to offer the Gospel to all.

Similarly, the temporary suspension of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program limits the country’s ability to offer protection for people seeking religious freedom in their own countries, many of whom are Christians seeking to practice their faith freely.

I love the Quakers so much. They have a long history of social justice, and of taking the Sermon on the Mount very seriously.
The Sermon on the what...? Oh, yeah. I'd forgotten about that. Isn't that Woke?

Although I don’t agree with their theology, I entirely agree with you! Very faithful people!

Refuse? That word is doing a whole lot of work and projecting intent with absolutely no information on their background, how long they have been in this country, and if its even true or social media nonsense for clicks and views.

Kids usually pick up languages faster than adults and I've seen even very young kids translate for older adults.

I wonder if he would be complaining if they were from Germany or Russia and unable to speak English.

I agree. But there’s a consequence of not learning the language of the country one is in.
In this case, it appears the consequence is school children being raided by armed federal agents. Seems like a totally reasonable response.

Do they have a phone? Most phones translate.
That's how I talk to them on my job

So in the current scheme of things, if ICE arrests undocumented mom and dad at home, what happens to their citizen kids at school? Is there an effort to reunite kids with parents before deportation or are they placed into the U.S foster care system?

That probably remains to be seen at the nuts and bolts level. What agency would do this reuniting and how? On the policy level, I think Homan has said that families will be able to choose whether to all be deported together, or separated by citizenship status. Not clear there, either, about where the kids would go if they choose to be separated. Could the parents nominate a guardian, or will Uncle Sam?
