  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I accepted Biden as president, even if I didn't agree with his policies. I still pray for him every day. We always had a president.

*shrug*

No we didn't. We had a leviathan, (aka bureaucracy run amok) not a President.

NOW, we have a President again.

-- A2SG, if I liked to play it safe, I wouldn't exactly be hanging out on religious themed message boards, would I?
Why not? Underneath your avatar it seems to indicate you're a religious person. Although it seems odd that you're apparently unwilling to name the religion. Maybe it's a religion you're embarrassed about? I don't know.

There's a reason that it's against the rules of this forum to post a video without a summary of it's content written by the OP. Can you guess what it is?
I didn't post a video.

Don't play coy. She was being dismissive. It's a little pet peeve of mine because I see it on web forums. Someone posts text or video from someone who's not well known, and instead of addressing the content, someone says something like "why should I listen to random guy?" As if being more famous correlates to being more wise. As if Taylor Swift is wiser than all of us.

We all take the time to read each other's posts on here, even though we don't know who we are. It's dumb to dismiss anyone's opinions based on "I don't know of that person, therefore what they have to say doesn't matter".
Since I was an early "agree"er to @Fantine 's "who is he?" post, I will tell you why I agreed with her "who is that guy" (and I thought about posting one myself until I noticed hers).

I've seen His name when I scroll past posts on social media citing him or whatever. The association with CNN seem like it is there when I see the two (CNN + Jennings) put together in a single post (like the OP). But that doesn't I have any idea who he is specifically or why I should care what he says. Is he a reporter? a politician? a political consultant or activist? an academic studying something related to politics?(or the former of any of those?) A conservative? A moderate? A christian nationalist? A socialist? I don't know. I am unfamiliar with his nature, other than he seems to be on CNN from time to time and people post clips featuring him saying stuff that I don't watch. (I never watch CNN at home, only in hotels and airports.)

If someone is being cited as saying something relevant or important, it is good to have clue who they are and why their opinions matter. Given the inane nature of the quote offered here, I am not impressed by him as a reliable source of anything.

Since you posted this, I presume you have the internet at your fingertips. If you're genuinely interested, a simple copy/paste of his name into the search engine of your choice should be able to help you out, rather than wasting space in a thread asking someone else to do your homework for you.

That's the thing. Maybe we're not interested in these politcal commentators. They way I figure it, if you want to make a claim of authority (as to why we should trust or care about this character) is necessisary to make the bare minimum of at least identify what their claim to expertise is. CNN commentators are dime-a-dozen and mostly unknown to non-CNN viewers.

I was here when they instituted said rule, we’d have entire threads that were just one video after another with nary a commentary or opinion in sight.

You're free to be disinterested in anything you choose.

The OP made no claim of authority. The entirety of his OP was "I love what Mr Scott Jennings said to his CNN colleagues."

Personally I think it's a silly rule because the vast majority of the time a video has a title which is self-explanatory. For example, if I post a video titled "Brain Greene Discusses The Multiverse", I still have to type out "This is a video where Brian Greene discusses the multiverse". Are there people here who have to read words twice in order to understand them? Are there people here who have to read words twice in order to understand them?

The intent of the rule (or at least part of it) is to foster discussion. If you post a video or an article, you should include your thoughts on it - what you agree with, what you disagree with, what you get out of it, where that knowledge might take us, etc - so that others can then discuss (with you, the person present in the forum) those thoughts. Brian Greene's thoughts on the multiverse may be interesting to you and could serve as a good jumping-off point for a discussion, but since Brian Greene isn't here and you are, it's far more appropriate to address you rather than him.

There was also a trend of people posting multi-hour videos as responses to people's comments, then getting angry when people didn't watch them.

Okay, that sounds reasonable.

Yeah it turned N&CE into argumentum via youtubium; (I believe that was also when it turned into N&CE(AR)).

You're not making sense. If other people's opinions don't matter to you, why are you participating on a web forum? Why are you even talking to me?

I'd assume because other posters here can engage in a debate with you, get more informed about the opinion you hold through questions. We have no way to find the reasoning behind Scott Jennings assertions or to debate him about the topic; so since he is someone we aren't aware of, can't talk to (unless he joins the forum and tells us who he is) about his opinion, his idea is largely worthless since he isn't here to defend it.

If memory serves, Scott Jennings is a conservative contributor to CNN and USA Today. (in the case of the latter he may not be on-staff, I know he's at least written guest pieces as I've seen his name on there before)

...so it's not surprising that he'd say that.

However, I wouldn't be surprised is other secret CNN anchors secretly agreed with him.

As we've seen in the recent past, when people leave CNN and start doing their own thing, their actual opinions on matters end up being a little different than the "opinions" they claimed to have on the air. Chris Cuomo is a notable example of that.

Again, by this logic we can't discuss Aristotle's ideas because he's not here to defend them, and for that reason they are largely worthless.

Well if we don't know the public, but non-famous, CNN contributors, how are we to know who the "secret CNN anchors" are? :)
