As an aside, Federal Prison Camps have tended to be the least secure and most comfortable incarceration facilities in the US. It is not without cause they have earned the nickname “Club Fed.” Given the short sentences people serve therein, a part of me feels it would be more appropriate to put prisoners convicted of non-violent crime but given lengthy sentences, such as the CEOs of companies convicted of accounting fraud, in such prison camps, while using more severe facilities to “scare straight” people with short sentences.

That’s true. The old Madison Square Garden was a beautiful building, as was Penn Station, which was exquisite, and its demolition above ground (which led to the oppressive warren of underground and overcrowded passages which have made me wish that Acela was routed through Grand Central, to make way for the current Madison Square Garden, which is one of the most vulgar and ugly sports venues, was a tragedy, although it did result in a major increase in power on the part of conservationists who have saved many other buildings, such as Grand Central, and related historical treasures like the San Francisco cable cars, from meeting a similar fate).*

*Of course, the conversion of the Post Office into the new Moynihan Train Hall should really improve things at Penn Station, and additionally some LIRR trains are now serving Grand Central which should further reduce overcrowding.

A new deep level tube between the two stations in the Manhattan Bedrock would be a real boon for commuters, and could also potentially allow for an automated peoplemover to connect the two stations. Given the relatively small number of stations on PATH, converting one of the two lines to a high capacity peoplemover so as to allow more trains to terminate in New Jersey would probably also be a good idea, and would actually not be that expensive, since it could be done with an upgrade to the signaling system. And indeed historically a great many trains did terminate in New Jersey at Penn Station, and this was also the raison d’etre for the now-closed station of Manhattan Transfer.

One thing I really regret not hearing more of from either candidate are plans for improvements to public transportation, which thanks to the success of Brightline in Florida is really an issue which is no longer partisan.
