  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The war has gone on long enough.

Both sides have made their point.

They blooming well haven't.

Russia's "point" is Ukraine belongs to us, and if they don't wont to fall in line and stay within an approved orbit we'll invade them, illegally annex their territory, slaughter their people and oppress those we don't kill.

Ukraine's "point" is that it's a sovereign nation and it gets to decide things like who its leaders are, who it partners with in the international community and that it gets to resist illegal invasions of it's territory until the foreign invaders #*(@-off back home.

Russia started this war, and it's not Ukraine's job to give in to Russia just because life is difficult or people think helping fund a war is expensive or Russia is misunderstood.

The war was avoidable.

Yes, the international community should have acted decisively to sanction Russia in 2014 for its illegal invasion, and given Ukraine security guarantees to protect its territorial integrity. With ironclad security guarantees in place, Russia would not have been able to launch another invasion.

We could have agreed to neutral UN Blue Helmets in 2017.

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how UN peacekeeping operations work. 'Blue Helmets' are only deployed after a conflict has ended or for conflict monitoring or mitigation. They are not deployed to active warzones (which is what Donetsk and Luhansk were in 2017).

We could have banned a few countries from NATO.

Why? Russia doesn't get to decide which countries are members. NATO, and its members, get to decide on whether to admit new members.

Ukraine has been a NATO partner for three decades, and was a candidate for membership for 13 years before Russia invaded. Nothing had changed in the relationship after the enhanced co-operation in 2014 in response to the first Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Clearly not. The Ukrainian point of border integrity has yet to be taken by the invading Russian army.

The fault is on Russia for deciding to invade another country. What did it expect?
