"President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity," Steven Cheung, Trump campaign communications director, said in a brief statement, noting that no further details were available yet.

The Secret Service said it was investigating the incident, which occurred just before 2 p.m., with local authorities.

"The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former president is safe," Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said.

U.S. Secret Service agents opened fire after seeing a person with a firearm near Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club while the Republican candidate was golfing on Sunday, according to two law enforcement officials.

The person fled in an SUV and was later apprehended in a nearby county by local law enforcement, the officials said. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity to talk about an ongoing investigation.

The golf course was partially shut down for Trump as he played, and agents were a few holes ahead of him when they noticed the person with the firearm, the officials said.

The person appeared to push the muzzle of the rifle through the fence line and that’s when agents fired, the officials said.

An AK-style weapon was recovered at the golf course.

I guess we can say that allowing people with mental health problems to own guns is par for the course in 2020s America. Maybe a third party might need to chip-in to develop a solution to the gun violence problem in the US, or else we may potentially get more hazards in the future, as some people seem to resort to violence nowadays.

Alright, if that is too many golf puns, I'll walk out. Golf is also a boring sport in my opinion. Prayers that no one gets hurt, whether that is the former president, and pray for the protection of all the candidates running for election in 2024.

We agree on this stuff, that guns should not be allowed for crazy folks. So, we will have to wait over the next few days, and see what the news says about the perp, and if the perp had mental issues.

Assuming that’s correct (if it is, idk why it’s still up), the guy’s definitely got a screw loose. He didn’t post much recently, but replied a ton. Mostly interested in helping Ukraine and seemed to like Nikki Haley and Vivik the most, and Trump the least.

Routh was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon of mass destruction, referring to a fully automatic machine gun. He was also charged with resisting, delaying and obstructing a law enforcement officer and driving while license revoked.

He was strongly pro-Ukraine and based on what he was posting on social media I'm going to say his motivation to assassinate Trump would be because of Trump's lack of support for defending Ukraine.

If the guy supported Ukraine, instead of trying to harm a candidate, he could have just waited until November to cast his vote for a candidate that supports Ukraine. He could choose to vote for Kamala, or if he does not like the current Democratic party, he could have voted 3rd party. Seems that common sense is put to the wayside in 2024.

``I ran around to the front of the (office building) to see what was going on,' Routh said. ``This guy comes crawling out the front door. (That's) when I confronted him on the steps.'

Routh said the man told him, ``Some lady up there is screaming and yelling.'

``To this guy, it was like nothing special was going on,' Routh said. ``It was like a walk in the park.

``He punched me at that point. He was a pretty strong fella, kind of short but strong. When he hit me, I grabbed hold of him. He shook free from me and took off running,' Routh said.
