  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that's how it works.
I can give you the scripture and you can decide what Paul is talking about.

1corinthians 13 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.

The idea is that the respective saint you pray to knows what you're going through better than you do, and can communicate your plight to God more intelligently.
Quite frankly, we don’t know how exactly heaven, and to a certain extent, all intercessory prayers work.

We will know. One day.

My point is simply this:

Should the Navy pray to St. Brandon the Navigator, who died in AD 577, if a ship gets lost at sea?

How about a CVAN (nuclear powered aircraft carrier) that has a radiation leak in its reactor?

How can a man, who only lived to AD 577, take such a plight to Jesus intelligently?

St. Brendon is alive in Christ. He can offer prayers for him in heaven.

He’s now in the presence of Christ and pray for us before God’s throne.

An Eastern Orthodox monk in Greece named Porphyrios, who had not even finished primary school education, was so full of God's Grace that he could hold intelligent conversations with highly educated people, utilising their specialised vocabulary. He talked with surgeons and physicists, military and politicians and they all assumed he was highly educated.

Yes. I assume they are far more intelligent in heaven than we are on earth.

I’m not in heaven yet, so I don’t know.

I love the Orthodox Church but will never convert.

That’s a fascinating fact!

Padre Pio, a Catholic Saint, could hear confessions in other languages and understand them even though he never studied the language

(Not to go off on a tangent, but he heard nearly 5 million confessions as a priest)

God gives grace to the humble. He is a God of miracles, after all.

It seems to me that Solomon would be the go-to choice for intercessory prayer, but I guess not.

1 Kings 4:29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.
30 And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt.
31 For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about.
32 And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.
33 And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, and of fishes.
34 And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.

God granted him knowledge that he had never been taught. Isn't that the point?
Let me get this straight.

A nuclear powered aircraft carrier springs a radiation leak in its reactor, and the crew prays to God in Jesus' name to save them, and they're praying to the wrong person?

They should be praying to Mobhí Clárainech (aka St Brandon) instead?

Solomon's knowledge and wisdom was God given. Those in heaven would have access to all knowledge and wisdom.

God wants there to be love between all His children. When we seek the prayers of those who He has revealed to be among His righteous ones, it builds love between the intercessor and those seeking their intercessions. It obviously pleases God greatly because He grants innumerable miracles through the intercessions of the Saints.

They can offer their prayers to Jesus and ask St. Brendon to pray for them as well since he is now in heaven.

Pray (ask) isn't the same as worship.

That's a misunderstanding some Protestants have.

To God be the glory!

I'm sorry, pro, but I can't believe even the pope keeps a list of saints to pray to.

And I would venture to say that a Catholic in the Navy today has never even heard of St. Brandon.

Three quick questions:

1. Do you buy indulgences?

2. Do you pray for the dead in Purgatory?

3. How many lay Catholics do you think can list all seven sacraments, let alone keep them?
