  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Harris will make the choice before August 7th.

Which VP choice would help Harris most in winning the presidency and why?

Which candidate would hurt her chances?

The following seem to have the inside track: Cooper, Shapiro and Kelly.

As an aside, the VP debate should be fun to watch.

I am not sure. None of them are close enough to the center. Whichever VP candidate is closest to the center would probably help Harris get votes from the center-right.

No one they offer as a VP would change my vote, I know what Harris stands for, and that's enough for me. However the anti Israel folks have a "genocide Josh" thing going for Shapiro on X - I think he's out

She will pick someone that closely aligns with her deepest convictions.

Probably. Wouldn't it be nice if a VP could be a centrist, or center right, to balance out the left, or vice versa? I'd say Liz Cheney would be a great VP for Kamala.

Liz Cheney isn't a centrist. Mark Kelley is the most centrist candidate on the likely list.

Yeah, Mark Kelly would work well. He also went into space at the turn of the millennium in the 1990s and 2000s.

Mark Kelly (former astronaut):

Yes, Liz Cheney is not a centrist, but as Trump does not like her, then I like her. :) She is more of a moderate Republican compared to the pro-Trump movement.

I think Cheney is a better person than Trump. The Cheney's however are as responsible for what their party has devolved into as anyone is.

True. Anyone who did not speak out against Trump at the time might be guilty for letting the party slide. At least Cheney is better than Donald.

I like Cooper for it. A popular two term Democratic governor of a red state must know something about the culture war.

Cooper might be a good idea, if he is closer to the center as well.

There are still a few conservative democrats who fit the bill but no-one is well known enough to garner a nod.

Yeah, like always. Conservative Democrats never get any votes.
Most of the conservative Democrats were run out of the party during the Clinton administration (like Tony Hall of OH). Obama's "fundamental transformation" finished off the rest.

Yeah, but they didn't do it like some of us hoped (that's when I became an independent) They had the potential of becoming a real labor party with people like Bernie and AOC. Instead we got a party of liberal elitists who look down their noses at anyone who hasn't finished grad school.

Which candidate would hurt her chances?
Well, if her chances are slim and none then it really does not matter, does it?

I'm reminded of the 1980 election: Carter vs Regan:
Jimmy Carter was an unsuccessful president and very unpopular even within his own party.

Yes, his party dumped Biden but Harris as VP carries the same baggage of the outcomes of the disastrous presidency of her boss.

Outcome:
Carter vs Regan.JPG

And the 1984 election: Mondale vs Regan: (Mondale was Jimmy Carter's VP):

Outcome:

That is true. The 1990s signaled the death knell of conservative democrats, while the 2010s-2020s sealed the nail in the coffin. The 1990s-2010s marked a period of time where moderate republicans were slowly getting ousted as well from the GOP.
