  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Biden’s recent statement to donors saying “it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye.”

A number of Republicans are pointing fingers at President Joe Biden for Saturday’s shooting at a Trump rally, with some citing Biden’s recent statement to donors saying “it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye.”

In a Politico article shared Monday, Biden reportedly told donors: “I have one job, and that’s to beat Donald Trump. I’m absolutely certain I’m the best person to be able to do that. So, we’re done talking about the debate, it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye.”

I think that speech in the USA is much too martial in many respects. Everything people don't like about, a "war" is declared upon. Metaphors regarding weapons abound. It doesn't lend itself to civil discourse. This is a larger, cultural problem, though, and has been going on for decades.

I belive the shooter has been identified as a 20 year old kid who is a Republican. Can't really twist this into Biden's fault. Be blessed.

How would someone know he donated to the Democratic party?

It's a good question, but it is being reported $15. Donations are registered I assume.
I did a little research. Found a government website and put his name in. No result.
Don't know!

I thought the pearl clutching around this sort of (extremely mild) rhetoric was silly when Gabby Giffords was shot and it’s still silly now. Shallow metaphors aren’t what amp up people to kill.

Suddenly (and without a hint of hypocrisy) conservatives are embracing the narrative that someone can talk people into inciting violence.

If anyone had said that about Biden minus any kind of attempt, the Secret Service would have interrogated them and maybe pressed charges.
Maybe if some rando said it. But not if Trump or any other prominent politician said it. It would just be considered a normal part of American campaign chatter, which it is.

Sadly, this type of phrasing has been used by the right for several years. They defended using it and should stop being hypocritical. All politicians should change their speech.

And liberals are suddenly eschewing it.

The best example is the comments of Sarah Palin and the shooting of Gabby Giffords. Of course, Republicans, at the time, all uniformly denied there was anything wrong with what Sarah Palin said. And you see above how these types of comments are still being made today.

I will say that I don't believe the comments by Palin and Biden had anything to do with the shootings, despite the gun rhetoric. At the same time, I do think it is the type of imagery that politicians should quit using. I believe we also need to go back to when both sides could admit the other side loves the USA, even if they believe the ideas of the other side will not be good for the US.

What I've seen is that the donation was made by another person with a similar name (likely a different middle name).

So that justifies and equalizes President Biden saying “it’s time to put [President] Trump in a bullseye”? I hardly think so.

This is just one more major foot-in-mouth blunder from the President. It's pretty much the absolute worst thing he could have possibly said in light of Trump very nearly having been assassinated less than a week later.
