I believe that it is man's inhumanity to man (dehumanization) that created a culture that allows abortion, not vice versa.A culture which treats babies in the womb as disposable is one that is open to dehumanization.
Why? Let's think about it.
Theoretically, 10,000 women have abortions. If it weren't for a bunch of busybodies--picketers holding signs, "Don't kill your baby!" and governors wanting to monitor women's menstrual cycles and give young women pregnancy tests before they cross state lines, etc.--no one would know. And if no one knew, they might turn their eyes to the all too visible problems in our society that they neglect while picketing abortion clinics.
On the other hand, if we had a society that honors life in every way--so that no child went to be hungry or dehydrated, or languished due to lack of medical care or dentistry, or was warehoused in decaying inner city schools with few resources and underpaid teachers, or going home to empty homes because of working parents--people would understand that human life is sacred. Human life is important. We know it is important because we see that it is valued in our society, and that mothers are respected.
Instead we see what is respected. Money. Money talks. Wealthy people get all the tax cuts. They exert inordinate clout on public officials and public policy. We pay for their tax cuts by cutting school lunch programs and SNAP benefits.
You can't show your respect for life by standing outside a clinic with a sign harassing and tormenting young women at a vulnerable and dangerous time in their lives.
You can attack dehumanization by valuing people---whether they are immigrants, people of color, disabled people, etc. And if you do that you will see fewer abortions.
