The Judge granted it, but if he finds out he campaigned and was physically at the speech location at the same time as the graduation what happens? Just a bad look for the jury? Contempt of court? There is at least one intermediate step before "real jail". Every courthouse has a lockup where defendants are held including as punishment for contempt. That courthouse also likely has windowless interior rooms that could do duty as a lockup The judge could sentence him to spend the lunch break in an empty room by himself with no devices or other materials.

IMO, sending him to a detention room as you describe for 4 hours would be an effective next step. For sure, he'll need several notebooks of right wing media praising his sacrifice to recover...
