  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Biblical command to 'turn the other cheek' doesn't mean Christians should 'tolerate tyranny'

Only problem is that the tyrant waiting in the wings is their leader, DJT.
And they lean more to his words than to the words of Jesus Christ.

That is a ridiculous thing to suggest in my opinion.
I am just waiting for the OP to make some kind of opinion to direct the thread instead of posting opinions of the other members opinions.

Kirk Cameron is well educated and has promoted Christian values for decades. Do you have a problem with that?
Nope. Does Jennifer Keaton have a view on the subject, or is it limited to the cast of Growing Pains?

This whole mess of Christians trying to force other people to think, feel and act just like them could be solved in an instant if they would just stop doing that.

If you don't like what America is leave.

Kirk Cameron has some thoughts on what it really means to "turn the other cheek."
The actor said intolerance, at least when it comes to evil and tyranny, is, in fact, a “very essential Christian virtue,” one which, he added, America’s founding fathers espoused.

In a Feb. 21 appearance on the “Timcast IRL” podcast with Tim Pool, Cameron touched upon a number of topics, including his fight against “religious viewpoint discrimination” in public libraries and Noah Webster’s Christian influence on education.
But it was in response to Pool’s apparent reference to a Christian Post story earlier this month about his comments on conservative Christians playing a role in America's decline by being “tolerant and accepting” that led to a lively conversation between Pool and Cameron.

Crediting a 2023 speech by entrepreneur Patrick Bet David for his comments, Pool summarized David's speech as essentially saying, “Christians in this country are good people who keep saying OK to these people, being tolerant, allowing them to live the way they want to live.
"But what happens is they push more into the institutions, they introduce dangerous, bad ideas, they start targeting kids, and now we're here where we are today."

Cameron responded by saying “turn the other cheek” and “love your neighbor” were never intended to allow for the tolerance of evil.

“… I see so many who are just tolerating evil and that’s not loving your neighbor,” he said. “At the end of the day, the two great Commandments of Christianity are to love God with all of your heart, mind, soul and strength, and the second is like it, to love your neighbor as yourself.

“If you 'tolerate' the kinds of things that bring misery to your neighbors and ultimately strip them of their liberties, you're not loving them.”
As an example, he cited Just War Theory, followed by most Christians for over a thousand years, which states that if you believe your enemy is preparing to attack, you are justified in defending your own people by attacking first.

Cameron said the Constitution is another means of mitigating against overreach by tyrants.
“We don't tolerate tyranny, either from the outside or the inside, and that is a very essential Christian virtue, is to not tolerate that type of thing,” he added.
I agree with him ... we are not to tolerate evil .. much evil in the world and getting worse every day.

Proverbs 4:14-15 ESV

Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil. Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on.

This entire thread is determined on what Cameron thinks tyranny and evil is. Since he was not defined the terms or given specific examples, all this is is some general statement which means little.

Tolerance of evil? What evil is he describing? weak and generalized. It appears that Cameron is looking for some added attention.
I'm surprised anyone pays attention to Cameron after he hooked with that Comfort guy who hilariously, and creepily, tried to disprove evolution by showing how a banana is well fitted for the human hand and mouth. Even Cameron had trouble taking it seriously. These are not serious people.

What I don't like is what Trump supporters want America to become. What I don't like is their claim to a unique authority of defining what America should be.

And, if you've noticed, neither do I. It's just that I distribute my gripes across the entire political spectrum.

Do you assume that, just because you're a Christian. that your gripes are better founded than mine?

No. I assume that as a Philosopher, I will traverse with inquiry, scrutiny and evaluation where others fear to tread ...

It seems many Christians, including the one quoted, are willing to tolerate tyranny so long as they would get to make the rules.

It's atheists who want to impose their religion on everybody else.

Wait. You're in the UK. Shouldn't you at least live in America before you tell people to leave it?

In fact you see tinges of this in the Putin reverence thats creeping into certain "conservative" circles. A tyrant for sure, but one who makes a fuss for "traditional" values.

So, when Christians say that we should stand up to different forms of tyranny in America, all of a sudden you think we are talking about an armed civil war? That is a ridiculous thing to suggest in my opinion.

Amen and Amen!

Amen to the whole thread. As Christians we follow the law of the land until it crosses paths with not being able to live the way we are required to live before God.

Christians have always, from the day this country was formed stood for what is right in this country, and we are honor bound before God to continue in this tradition.

It is the condition we were born into, we were born free, and it's time we took full advantage of that position and bring the adults back into the room while we still can.

What does the Bible say in 1 Corinthians 7:20-23?

It says I am to continue in the condition I was born. And I was born free, a daughter of these United States, bound to fight as a Christian for what is right before God.

That slavery thingy made quite a few Africans born in America as slaves. They were not free. Those Christians back in the day may have done right for the country but did not do what is right for their fellow humans.

But they were born free, and are my brothers and sisters if they be in Christ standing beside me and my neighbors if not.

We were all born free, and if we be in Christ, continuing in the traditions of our founding fathers - becoming more and more beautiful by the year as we mature together in Christ.

In Him we are greater than the lowest common denominator, far far far greater. And in Him and as Americans we are born free, and have become His slaves and special creation.

And not one of us will be slaves. We stand on our feet our conscious clear. And doing His Will we are, if we are in Him.
