And the purpose of the trial (which is quite modern in its legal motivations) was to serve a test case to get the Tennessee anti-evolution law declared unconstitutional (teaching of religion in public schools). It didn't work.

I stand by what I wrote. The main purpose of the Scopes trial was to challenge the constitutionality of the Tennessee law.
