Nature magazine one of the worlds most prodigious science journals has stepped into the subject of anti intellectualism in relation to the COVID-19 virus.

Anti-intellectualism (the generalized distrust of experts and intellectuals) is an important concept in explaining the public’s engagement with advice from scientists and experts. We ask whether it has shaped the mass public’s response to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We provide evidence of a consistent connection between anti-intellectualism and COVID-19 risk perceptions, social distancing, mask usage, misperceptions and information acquisition using a representative survey of 27,615 Canadians conducted from March to July 2020. We exploit a panel component of our design (N = 4,910) to strongly link anti-intellectualism and within-respondent change in mask usage. Finally, we provide experimental evidence of anti-intellectualism’s importance in information search behaviour with two conjoint studies (N ~ 2,500) that show that preferences for COVID-19 news and COVID-19 information from experts dissipate among respondents with higher levels of anti-intellectual sentiment. Anti-intellectualism poses a fundamental challenge in maintaining and increasing public compliance with expert-guided COVID-19 health directives.

I'd have to agree, there is no group that seems to have a solution to social problems. I have always abhorred the people who think internet access to the poor is a social right. As if the internet helped anyone get along better or fit into society.
Access to the internet is only peripherally about "getting along better", although why you'd highlight just the internet as a failure here I don't know, nor is it's role to help people "fit better" into society. It's functions are the creation of groups of interest whether by BBS (showing my age) or by social media, entertainment, education and, of course, the generation of income. All of these activities are denied the poor if they have no access to the internet. It makes them more vulnerable, more marginalised and less involved with others around them. Speaking as a former librarian internet access for the poor is indeed a human and social right.

Well, science does get in the way of what we might want to think and believe. We might even have to change or reinterpret what we think and believe. That might involve taking faith to a deeper level. But think about it. How many of us are willing to change our world view?

Actually I think many of us long to do so while others will always refuse.

Sometimes faith will turn into something

Since this thread has been reopened here is a classic piece of anti-intellectualism from ICR.

Yikes!

There is apparently no level to which they will not stoop to denigrate science. I have *zero* regrets about every nasty thing I have ever said, written or thought about ICR and their ilk.

Vile.

People who want to bring back religious dominion complaining about authoritarianism from scientists is pretty ridiculous.

The basic idea of the internet in providing information is a right as it gives people information which helps them become aware of their rights and to make informed decisions. But at the same time information can lose its relevance with an overload of counter views and the emergence of fake news. Information can also be controlled such as only presenting or emphasizing certain view over others.

The ICR video could easily be put out as a training film for how anti-intellectualism works.

(1) Portray scientists as elitists to create an "us" versus "them" attitude.
(2) In order to differentiate the "us" from the "them", the "them" are morally inferior from the "us"; in this case the scientists are manipulative and suppress dissenting views.
(3) The "them" are imposing their will on the "us".

The video also shows the dangers of anti-intellectualism; if people took this ICR garbage seriously resulting in a decline in vaccination rates, lives will be lost.

The same (1) to (3) characteristics are also lurking behind deSantis' recent so-called 'warnings' to the Floridian (voting) public of the supposed risk of heart attacks from the current CoVid vaccine. But he goes even further and demands that doctors reiterate his highly skewed views in doctor-patient consultations on decisions which might lead to vaccinations.

FWIW, (disclaimer: what follows is only a media report on the topic):
'He relies on information gleaned from frequently inaccurate death certificates - rather than medical records, {which has never been published in scientific reviews}, skews the results by trying to exclude anyone with covid-19 or a covid-related death and draws conclusions from a total of 20 cardiac-related deaths in men 18 to 39 that occurred within four weeks of vaccination. Experts noted the deaths might have been caused by other factors, including underlying illnesses or undetected covid'.

Appalling public behaviour (if so) .. given his lack of the ability to provide the hospitals with the capacity to handle the influxes already demonstrated in Florida during the recent outbreaks there ..

Historically anti-intellectualism prevailed from all sides of the political spectrum, now it seems to be a trademark of the conservative side of politics.
Bashing intellectuals whether they be scientists, teachers, writers etc. is political populism which the conservative side of politics can exploit as their voter base is generally less educated and more distrusting of intellectuals.

They don't have to.
Anti-intellectualism is the equivalent of the US (or any other country) shooting itself in the foot if the end result is a decline in education standards.

I disagree that with creationist ideas but there is some truth that western science has promoted a particular bias about knowledge and then imposed that on minorities.

Methodological tensions for non-Indigenous people in Indigenous research: A critique of critical discourse analysis in the Australian context

Decolonizing science: it’s high time for Indonesia to break free from overreliance on Western theories
The movement to decolonize science calls for the scientific community to break free from knowledge production dominated by colonial nations – particularly the Western world (eurocentrism) – to make more scientific room for scholars from all corners of the globe.

Decolonize science – time to end another imperial era
Former imperial nations still appear almost self-evidently superior to most of the once-colonized countries when it comes to scientific study. The empires may have virtually disappeared, but the cultural biases and disadvantages they imposed have not.

The examples you have given fall in the field of social science and while scientists could have done a better job in making science more inclusive, the point of this thread is where there is an agenda based opposition to science which manifests itself as anti-intellectualism.
The ICR video is from an organization which doesn't fit into any of the categories of your links, it doesn't seek to decolonize science or seek consultation with scientists, it rejects the science outright based on vilifying scientists using the reasons given in post #370.
This is a common behavioral pattern which climate scientists are also subjected to.

Here is a general definition of anti-intellectualism.

Anti-intellectualism is hostility to and mistrust of intellect, intellectuals, and intellectualism, commonly expressed as deprecation of education and philosophy and the dismissal of art, literature, and science as impractical, politically motivated, and even contemptible human pursuits.[1] Anti-intellectuals present themselves and are perceived as champions of common folk—populists against political and academic elitism—and tend to see educated people as a status class that dominates political discourse and higher education while being detached from the concerns of ordinary people.

That sounds a lot like identity politics in that the ideologies of some groups under inclusion are trumping scientific facts which seems to be anti-intellectual. It is happening in STEM fields as the overall level of intellect is being dumbed down to accommodate these Woke and politically correct ideologies.

One might suspect that the new ideology only affects intrinsically political areas of study, such as Government and History. But in fact it has infected every area, even science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The basis for the promotion of these ideologies is that Western nations have oppressed people using science and that science is but one way of gaining knowledge and not exclusive as far as truth is concerned when it comes to how we should order society. Now inclusiveness and individual and group rights take priority over long established scientific facts.

Here is a scientific fact, the earth’s orbital eccentricity e is approximately 0.01671 and like any other scientific fact is in no way affected by Harvard changing its policies.

The author makes it very clear to differentiate between scientists and science.
Yes scientists being human can also be anti-intellectual along with being racists, sexist, wokeist or any other type of “ist” but scientific facts are based on empirical evidence.
Science is greater than the individual.

Are you trying to insert your pet subject of religion playing a role in science?
If you think inclusiveness is a dumbing down of science which it isn’t as only a small percentage of postgraduates end up as post doctorate researchers impacting directly on science, the inclusion of religion is a complete dumbing down as God is unfalsifiable in science.

This is a thread about anti-intellectualism where the victims according to anti-intellectuals are not some specific marginalized oppressed people but the great unwashed who are being lied to.
The ICR provided a “reason” for the lie; another common reason for both COVID and anthropogenic climate change denial is the conspiratorial nonsense of scientists working in cahoots with governments to establish total control over their populations.

This the level of absurdity anti-intellectualism amongst the scientifically illiterate can reach.

But knowledge of scientific facts are only as good as the standards we set in gaining that knowledge. If the standard if reduced to accommodate politically correct ideology then we are dumbing ourselves down. Those standards are set by universities like Harvard.

Yes I agree that its the scientist that is being anti-intellectual. But I think what is happening in post modernist society is more than just subjective influences on science. Its more about epistemology, how we can know what is a fact in this world. People are questioning the science method is the only way to know facts about the world.

So though science can reveal objective facts about the world but in the context of an all inclusive view of reality (complete theory) people claim they are not the only facts or truth about the world. Now scientific facts are being measured against alternative ways to know reality such as Indigenous knowledge or individual and group truths about reality and now the science is disputed and often giving way to these alternative truths or facts about the world.

In other words its not about disputing scientific facts but disputing that scientific facts are the true facts that constitutes reality. We can see this happening with climate change, gender and transgender ideology, genetics, biology and even physics. Primarily I think about the Hard problem of integrating the subject and observer into the equation. What role and influence they have on the world.
Are you trying to insert your pet subject of religion playing a role in science?

No actually just as I tried to explain above its not about religion though I think post modernist deconstructive ideologies are like religious belief in that they impose beliefs and ideological assumptions about the world as the 'Truth' in how we should order society. For example the idea that there is no fixed nature and we can reconstruct nature in accordance with our ideals of how society or the world for that matter should be ordered. Like how its considered wrong to refer to there being 2 sexes and genders (male and female). That use to be a scientific fact.
This is a thread about anti-intellectualism where the victims according to anti-intellectuals are not some specific marginalized oppressed people but the great unwashed who are being lied to.
I think these ideologies have permeated into our Institutions and are influencing policies which are dumbing us down or as you say are promoting lies because they want to be seen as politically correct. Its no coincident that those who are complaining about the lies of Western Science are mostly the same identity groups or those supporting the same ideologies.

This is part of post modernism where all the grand narratives including scientific fact is being undermined by alternative ways of knowing which is fueled by the cynicism of people about science itself being the true arbiter of truth.

But its a real movement. I'm not saying I agree but these ideologies seem to have weight. They do creep into government and effect policy. They do shut down the facts and truths, close down free speech, spread fake news, emotionally blackmail, distort and misrepresent the facts/truth and it works. Its undermining long held traditions and truths.

The end result is people generally are losing their faith in science. There's a high % of junk science presented in peer review which shows the level we have been reduced to. In some ways people are becoming more skeptical of scientists than salesmen.

Really, they don't matter to facts.* The eccentricity of the Earth's orbit is not dependent on the ideological or social selection use in building the team that measured it. It wouldn't matter if it had be determined by those complicit in a Stalinist purge; the Vatican observatory; Harvard College Observatory; a bunch of middle class, white, male NASA engineers; or team of undergraduates that included only wheelchair bound students and black lesbians.

It's the accuracy of the measurement and the techniques used, not the people who did them that matter. The text I quoted is your direct response to @sjastro 's note that such facts are not dependent on politics and yet you still wrote that. Sigh.

*Studies of people are of course different as the subject are, you know, people. There is some serious concern (among others) in experimental psychology that too many studies have been published where all of the subjects were white, middle-class college students and just might not represent the full range of human psychological responses.
