First, Cassius (whom he was named after) was ALSO a slave owner.
Second, he did not choose the name for himself, it was given him by the Nation of Islam (Black Muslim) movement of Malcolm X fame.

First, Cassius was at least a slave owner that worked to end slavery.

Second, Nation of Islam may have chosen the name but he was not obligated to accept the name of someone who promoted black slavery. It was still his choice.

It's one thing to talk about and yes even criticize historical decisions that still have an effect on the world today. A boxer changing his name 60 years ago is not that.

As horrible as it is for him, to slap 'stupid' (a lack of intelligence) on it is misguided in my opinion.

Separate from the spiritual issues, the man was intelligent, thoughtful (although misguided) and highly talented.
