Thanks to the calls to defund the police last year,
and the lawless attacks on our cities that followed.
Violent Crime in America has increased.

More likely a reaction to the economic effects of covid, because there has actually been very little actual "defunding" of police anywhere.

Probably because it is one of the freer countries.

If it were tightly run with secret police and electronic surveillance everywhere and a brutal penal system like many dictatorships operate, I am certain that there would be more of a deterrent to crime.

What about all those countries in western Europe that have far less crime, far less incarceration...without secret police and brutal penal systems and dictatorships?

Not according to the Bible! Christians are not under law but under grace.
  • Romans 7:12 (KJV)
Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
  • Romans 3:31 (KJV)
Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Well one recent one is that one of the states has made it a felony punishable for upto 4 years, to make a typo on your voting registration.

For a typo or for falsifying information? There’s a difference. I mean a typo is like misspelling your name Kraen Stemmons, it isn’t the same as misspelling your name as Sarah Johnson when your actual name is Karen Stemmons. Or entering your social security number as 557-92-6745 when it’s actually 664-25-9814. That’s not a typo that’s a completely different social security number. So I’d really like to see exactly what kind of “typo” these people are sent to prison for.

The point is, it wasn't a violent crime.

Correlation does not equal causation.

Which certainly applies to claiming that the increase in crime was caused by police defunding...that didn't even happen.

Exclusive: $1 billion-plus riot damage is most expensive in insurance history - Axios

"The vandalism and looting following the death of George Floyd at the hands
of the Minneapolis police will cost the insurance industry more than any other
violent demonstrations in recent history.
-

"The calls have prompted action in some cities -- from the redirecting of some police funding, to vows to dismantle the entire Minneapolis Police Department.

It’s hard to compare America to unnamed countries. Can you be more specific?

" It could be people striking out at authority. It could be vandals, for lack of a better word, because they see vacant property and they decide to burn it for whatever reason."

"Seattle's numbers, for instance, were inflated by fires set during last summer's protests and riots, such as the torching of police cars. "

Yes because that's the first thing everyone thinks if when they get covid. "Let's go torch a police car!"
:)

... why is it you guys have the highest incarceration rate in the world?

And especially when it comes to a lot of the supposed freedom loving Southern states (e.g. Texas) which have higher than average incarceration rate relative to the U.S. as a whole?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_incarceration_rate
I don't think you understand what we mean by freedom. It's not the absence of laws.
It seems to me there's a big difference between common sense laws and over regulating everything.
There are laws that are impeding freedoms, but the opposite of totalitarianism isn't anarchy.
We are supposed to be a country with laws created by the people for the people. What we often get are nit picking rules and government sticking it's nose into our personal lives.

Because people confuse freedom with the freedom to do what they want apparently.

Freedom, in the context of America, is freedom to think what one wants, feel how they want, say what they want, believe what they want, without fear of government reprisal against them. Freedom is also the ability to accomplish whatever one wants to set their mind to without being hindered by the law because they're not in the right class of society.
Do people really confusing freedom with the freedom to do what THEY WANT? Is the high incarceration rate not because of a mixture of factors not the least of which is the disparity of true equality of persons due to economic, housing, racial, employment, privileged health and other social necessities and a laziness to use retributional punishment as means for change instead of more universal use of educational and caring means that have been successful and even pioneered in U.S.
