Due to the way humans are it is very convenient and necessary for us to reduce things into categories and into groups. On top of group cohesion there's also the fact that the brain can use a lot of energy, energy which might be a very limited resource. when we are too busy fighting enemies and trying to survive we don't have the luxury to participate as much in the higher things of humanity.How did they differ from Protestants

So I would think that there were many ups and downs depending on the people involved, the time in history and what they were having to go through. what we see as major Traditions are in fact a huge collection of experiences and people of various states of being who have various angels and evil spirits fighting over them.
