If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation. There is no salvation outside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine 1979, p. 670

If people believe in God at all, if they have any regard whatever for their own salvation, should they not realize, as is expressed in scripture, that salvation is through the Church, and that if people are cut off from the Church for any reason, they thus lose their inheritance in the kingdom of God?

Again, as stated in 1 Timothy 6:16 no man has seen God or can see Him. All that anyone can see of God are the energies that God manifests. The righteous can bear to have God's energies manifested/shown to them, to the extent to which they have been made capable by God's grace and their own cooperation. The more unrighteous people and spirits, not so much.
He is the way said:
There are some contradictions in the Bible as I have pointed out. Therefore we will have to agree to disagree about this. The Bible pointed out that Moses did speak with God face to face. The Bible states that Jacob and Stephen also saw God. The apostles saw the resurrected Christ as did Mary Magdalene.

Welcome to CF.

Marion Romney (LDS First Presidency) said, "This Church is the ensign on the mountain spoken of by the Old Testament prophets. It is the way, the truth, and the life. "

Therefore it was made clearly manifest that salvation is in the Church, and of the Church, and is obtained only through the Church.

Mark E. Petersen, Salvation Comes through the Church, Ensign, July 1973

Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 1979, p. 670

D. God is the Supreme Being in the universe.
1. God the Father is greater than all (see Ephesians 4:6; John 10:29).
2. As the Supreme Being, God the Father should be the object of our love and worship (see D&C 18:40; 20:29; Joshua 22:5; Mark 12:30; D&C 4:2; Luke 4:8).
3. God created all things through His Son (see Hebrews 1:1–2; Moses 1:32–33; 2:1).

E. The Father presides over the Godhead
1. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are the members of the Godhead (see Articles of Faith 1:1; 1 John 5:7; Alma 11:44).
2. Each member of the Godhead is physically separate and distinct from the others (see D&C 130:22; Matthew 3:16–17; Acts 7:55–56).
3. The members of the Godhead are united in Their attributes, power, and purpose (see John 17:20–21; D&C 20:28; 35:2; 2 Nephi 31:21; 3 Nephi 11:27).
4. The Father is the supreme member of the Godhead (see John 14:26, 28, 31; 2 Nephi 31:7, 12; 3 Nephi 28:11).

He is the way said:
The Book of Mormon points out that they (plural) are one God. The Bible also uses the plural to describe God:
(Old Testament | Genesis 3:22)

22 ¶ And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us,.....
(New Testament | John 17:20 - 23)
(Old Testament | Psalms 82:1)

1 GOD standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

God is plural. I agree with D&C 130:22

Therefore it was made clearly manifest that salvation is in the Church, and of the Church, and is obtained only through the Church.
Mark E. Petersen, Salvation Comes through the Church, Ensign, July 1973

So lets look at what Br. Peterson's real intent was;

"When the Savior established his church during his mortal ministry, and as it was further developed by the twelve apostles of that day, one important fact became conspicuously clear, which is: that salvation comes through the Church.

It does not come through any separate organization or splinter group nor to any private party as an individual. It comes only through the Church itself as the Lord established it.

It was the Church that was organized for the perfecting of the Saints.
It was the Church that was given for the work of the ministry.
It was the Church that was provided to edify the body of Christ, as Paul explained to the Ephesians."

So Peterson was talking about the church established by Jesus Christ. We can argue over the meaning but in Matt 16 Jesus told Peter he was establishing a Church. In 1 Cor 3 Paul talk about the church, he says he plants while another increase.

10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

His letter to the Ephesians is important because he establishes the authority of the Church.

Ch 2
19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

Ch 3 He hopes the new gentile converts will come;
"to the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God/the Father.... Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

In Chapter 4 he tells us
4 There is one body /church, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Paul during his journey meets some men who were baptized unto John the Baptist and he makes them get baptized all over again and this time in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. There is only one baptism. There is only one true Gospel.

Now he goes back to those apostles
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

By the 'edifying of the body of Christ' I don't think he means the body of the church but for the preparation of the sacrament.

1 Cor 10
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

It was the responsibility of the leaders of the Church Jesus established to do this for the body of the Church.

For how long?
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Why?
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

He warned the leaders in the Church that different men/wolfs would stand up to lead the people astray. It was the responsibility of the leadership to keep the doctrines pure.

15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Jesus is both the cornerstone and the head of his Church.

Throughout Acts the body of the Church of Jesus Christ functions as intended. They met often to discus issues like circumcision and to call a new Apostle. As they traveled they established Churches and anointed Bishops, Elders etc.

But as time went on the false prophets began to arise as Jesus said they would and they taught a false gospel, which could not save anyone. Only within the Church established by Jesus Christ teaching the true gospel can salvation be found.

Br. Peterson makes that point;
"But there were men in the Lord’s own day who taught false doctrines and led the people into mistaken paths. These the Savior severely criticized, accusing them of apostasy from the very law of Moses which they pretended to preach.

He said to them, “Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law?” (John 7:19.)

And again he said, “… had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.” (John 5:46.)

What a sad commentary! Had the people believed Moses, instead of the crafty false teachers of their day, they would have accepted Christ, because Moses wrote of Christ. And if they had accepted Jesus, they would have received salvation through his church.

But being blinded by false teachers, they rejected both Moses and Christ, and thus never joined the Lord’s church and hence did not receive the salvation which was available through it."

He goes on to name off some of the different groups that began to splinter off the original Church of Jesus Christ. They went into apostasy where there were no apostles, no prophets no authority to baptize or edify the body of Christ.

"Historians say that within one hundred years after Christ, as many as thirty splinter groups and separate denominations of Christians arose.

Further evidence of early apostasy in the Church is brought forcefully and particularly to our attention by the manner in which Paul wrote his first letter to the Corinthians.

In it he testified that there can be no divisions in Christ. Rather, he said, “… I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” (1 Cor. 1:10.)"

I think all of you would agree that salvation is not found in the Gnostics churches of those days and that was Br. Peterson's point.

He then turns his attention to the Latter Day Church and says the same thing is happening now. Ya all know there are various splinter groups within the umbrella called Mormonism.

"Salvation is not to be found in splinter groups today any more than it was to be found in the various denominations which polluted the teachings of Moses anciently or which, in the days of early Christianity, transgressed the laws, changed the ordinances, and broke the everlasting covenant."

I'm sure you look at us Mormons and want to say salvation is not found in your splinter group. Br Peterson's point is the same but standing on the other side of the argument.

I'm editing a little here, this is one of those examples where the speaker assume his audience already knows it's only through the merits of Christ we are saved as the Book of Mormon teaches.

No contradiction here. The Bible simply teaches that no one has ever, nor can ever see the essence of God, but God's projected (manifested) energies can be seen. Moses therefore could not have seen the face of God when the word "face" is used as a metaphor of God's unknowable and non see-able essence. The speaking of Moses with God "face to face" is a metaphor pointing to the intimate Communion that Moses has with God in the Holy Spirit (in other words, through God's see-able energies).

The Bible uses many terms and phrases as metaphors pointing to the nature of things. "Face" can mean God's unknowable essence, while "face to face" can mean intimate fellowship, or Communion with God in the Holy Spirit. It is not supposed to be understood literally, as if the non see-able essence of God really has a face that can be seen.

I'm beginning to realize that much of the character of Mormonism may have something to do with a general inability to grasp the deep meanings of metaphorical language, along with a general failure to be able to distinguish between what is meant to be understood metaphorically and what is meant literally.

You realize don't you that you just added to the Bible? There is no footnote which says this is only a manifestation!

You're quoting our scripture to us--- the scripture WE believe, but Mormons claim can cause "an exceedingly great many do stumble, yea, insomuch that Satan hath great power over them."

1 Nephi 13
29 And after these plain and precious things were taken away it goeth forth unto all the nations of the Gentiles; and after it[the Bible] goeth forth unto all the nations of the Gentiles, yea, even across the many waters which thou hast seen with the Gentiles which have gone forth out of captivity, thou seest—because of the many plain and precious things which have been taken out of the book, which were plain unto the understanding of the children of men, according to the plainness which is in the Lamb of God—because of these things which are taken away out of the gospel of the Lamb, an exceedingly great many do stumble, yea, insomuch that Satan hath great power over them.

Paul during his journey meets some men who were baptized unto John the Baptist and he makes them get baptized all over again and this time in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. There is only one baptism. There is only one true Gospel.

Joseph Smith introduced a false gospel.

Now he goes back to those apostles
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Via the Holy Spirit.

By the 'edifying of the body of Christ' I don't think he means the body of the church but for the preparation of the sacrament.

We, the Church, are the body of Christ.

The Mormon "sacrament" is NOT the communion that Jesus introduced. Joseph Smith introduced the water.

1 Cor 10
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

Amen! The Bible is true.

It was the responsibility of the leaders of the Church Jesus established to do this for the body of the Church.

Joseph Smith and his followers were not chosen by God.

For how long?
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Why?
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

Amen!

He warned the leaders in the Church that different men/wolfs would stand up to lead the people astray. It was the responsibility of the leadership to keep the doctrines pure.

God kept His doctrines pure. The word of God stands forever and the gates of hell cannot destroy His word. Had He allowed His word to be destroyed, we'd be without
"scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:" 2 Timothy 3:16

Amen!

JESUS is the way! Are you admitting the Mormon teaching that we are stumbling (IOW, not following JESUS)?

"There is an overwhelming lack of understanding in the world in relation to these principles of salvation and exaltation given to prepare mankind for a place in the kingdom of God, and this lack causes many to stumble. There is no excuse on the part of members of the Church, for they have received the necessary revelation directly from the heavens in this Dispensation of the Fulness of Times. The great mission of the Son of God has been revealed in the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants more clearly than any other place. Many passages that have been misunderstood, and therefore mistranslated in the Bible, are clarified in these sacred volumes."

[quote-He is the way]Yes the Bible does have many metaphors. That is why we need to look at the context of the verse:
(Old Testament | Genesis 32:30)

30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
(Old Testament | Exodus 33:11)

11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend......

Afterward Jacob stated and my life is preserved. He must have known that not everyone was able to see the face of God and live. Moses said as a man speaketh unto his friend. How would he speak to his friend face to face and that be a metaphor?[/quote]

Joseph Smith introduced a false gospel.

Via the Holy Spirit.

We, the Church, are the body of Christ.

The Mormon "sacrament" is NOT the communion that Jesus introduced. Joseph Smith introduced the water.

Amen! The Bible is true.

Joseph Smith and his followers were not chosen by God.

Amen!

Christians belong to His Church, not the organization started by Joseph Smith.

Joseph Smith introduced a false gospel.
He is the way said:
I do not belong to the church of Joseph Smith, neither do I belong to the church of Abraham, or that of Moses. I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ. We follow the precepts of Jesus by obeying His commandments as He has instructed us to do. He said:
(New Testament | John 14:15)

15 ¶ If ye love me, keep my commandments.
(New Testament | John 14:21)

21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Keeping the commandments of God is the whole duty of man:

(Old Testament | Ecclesiastes 12:13 - 14)

13 ¶ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

True Christians will keep the commandments because true Christians love Jesus Christ.

Mormons follow a false gospel. All the commandments of Christ are in the Bible.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

We are saved by grace (Jesus paid the debt) through faith in His blood not of works.

Philippians 2
13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
