i'm a generous tipper, but i never tip for food from McDonald's or other fast food places.

if there are fledgling places, however, with a jar at the counter for tips, i tip generously.

It may be different in your area, but in my area workers at fast food places are paid on average higher than workers in unionized grocery stores. The going wages for fast food places around here are about $12.00/hr to start. I see that on signs in windows where they are looking for help. Meanwhile I know a person that has worked at a local unionized grocery store for 20 years and makes $11.75 /hr. The brand spanking new fast food worker also will not pay the union dues that the 20 yr veteran store worker pays so I would think tipping the fast food worker but not the grocery store worker seems a bit unfair.

Well fast food and an independent restaurant are two different situations. It's not as if I'm throwing down a tip at McDonald's when I get a shake.

I was under the impression that food clerks like workers at McDonald's Subway etc. make minimum wage or better. It is my understanding that they legally must make at least minimum wage because they are not expected to receive tips. As real servers usually make less than minimum wage, tipping food clerks who make more per hour and do very little in the way of serving with none of the skill or attention of actual servers is somewhat of an insult to real servers. It would be like telling the pharmacist that the clerk that handed you your prescription deserves the same remuneration.
It's hard to survive on minimum wage. Going to school, bills and rent. The least I can do. Is give them a tip. McDonald's doesn't have that option. But I see no reason to go there. Since I'm not into their food. Subway and my favorite Chinese restaurant does. They both give their employees minimum wage. That's my way of helping the people in need . That work . It's better than giving the person looking for their next alcohol or drug fix. Money.

I understand your point @grasping the after wind. When I pickup carryout, it's often at the bar. Since the bar servers work on tips, I usually tip. Exceptions might be places like Jason's Deli.

You are entitled to tip whoever you want. No one is required to tip. IMO a server that disparages their customer is showing the world why the customer decided against tipping.

No, pickup.

Then tipping is not necessary or warranted IMO. The person doing the bulk of the serving work is the customer.

Here:
fast-food (mcDonalds, Burger King etc) will start at or near minimum wage.

Restaurants like Outback, O'Charleys, Chili's etc, which are the mid-scale chains will pay servers well under the minimum wage (some less than $3 per hour) and the tips are split among the various positions with cooks and hosts getting a small percentage and the servers a larger one.

Chain restaurants like the ones you mention should be ashamed of themselves for not paying minimum wage. They are IMO using a loophole in the wage laws to get away with paying less. Their servers are short changed because they do not get tips commensurate with their work. Servers in better restaurants may be no better servers but they will receive more money because of the price of the food. The lower cost for lesser quality that entices the customer is being subsidized by the server . The server is essentially punished for the lack of quality in the food.

Well, who you tip is your business not mine. You can tip whoever you please for whatever reason you desire. Where you eat is also your business but you could not get me to even look at a Subway sub as I find them nearly inedible. I tried one once and felt like I was eating a complete loaf of bread with a dab of grease and a pinch of something vaguely meatlike for flavor.

No...sorry for the confusion. I don't often eat fast food at all, but there are a number of independent restaurants/diners/delis that I'll order food from and then carry it out and eat at home.

At those places, I would almost always tip.

No...it's the same thing. I tip simply because of...

1. The work involved.
2. The relatively low pay of the employees.
3. The added incentive to not mess with my food.

Tipping for #3 almost sounds like more of a bribe for them to not be retaliatory toward you.

I would agree.
And as an aside; the new tax law, just recently signed now allows the restaurant/owner to ALSO take a percentage of the tips, where that was previously prohibited.
I think in some locations, this will be very problematic.

Just another example of the tolerance of a liberal based Australian company.

Outback steakhouse isn't Australian. Any place that serves Fosters, "bloomin onions" and "Aussie Cheese fries" (whatever the hell they are) is not Australian.

And let's not get started on what passes for 'Chinese food" in America

It could be worse. Have you seen what they try to pass off as American food?

I won't be buying anything from Outback, that's for sure.

If the company is so fragile that it has to punish a simple waitress for posting on her own personal webpage about the injustice done to her, I feel forewarned enough to give my own business to a respectable corporation.....

They are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

If they did nothing, how many people would have been up in arms about a restaurant criticizing the customer? Yes, the "employee" is the one who criticized but if the restaurant does nothing then they are at the very least complicit in that criticism.

On the flip side, if the restaurant fires her, then people will be mad that an employee was fired.

Truth be told, ANY service oriented business is going to side with the customer. Hence that phrase "The Customer is Always Right"

You can't directly or indirectly or through on of your employees create press that makes a customer look bad. HOw will other customers take that?

SO truth be told, once this story grew legs and became "known" within the local circles the restaurant had no choice but to fire her.

INCIDENTALLY, when will people learn that Facebook and social media sites in general ARE NOT PRIVATE!!! Especially when said site lists you by picture and name.

It's amazing how many people get fired from their jobs due to something they said or done or posted on their sites.

I am guessing this "Outback" is the USA version of the Australian themed restaurant/pub chain "Walkabout" here in the UK?

Not really. Walkabout serves food I would actually eat.

Never heard of Walkabout, but likely yes. It's a themed steakhouse using an Australian them.
