  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

President Trump Pardons Former Sheriff Joe Arpaio

President Trump has pardoned controversial former Sheriff Joe Arpaio for a misdemeanor criminal contempt conviction.

Arpaio was convicted of criminal contempt earlier this summer for defying a judge's order that his deputies stop detaining immigrants because they lacked legal status. His deputies carried on the practice for 18 months.

Among his most controversial measures, the sheriff instructed his deputies to detain Hispanic residents and inquire about their legal status. He then disregarded a federal judge's ruling that he didn't have the legal authority to do so.

This doesn't help the argument that republicans aren't racist, IMO.
Can the president really be this clueless? Can he not see how much damage he's doing to both his own reputation and to the Republican party's reputation with this decision?

Interesting that they waited until a major hurricane was slamming into Texas before dropping this and then skedaddling out of sight.

Unfortunately, most people I know are perfectly capable of being concerned about a natural disaster AND calling out an early Christmas gift to Richard Spencer's folks at the same time.

Keep in mind that former Sheriff Arpaio lost his re-election bid in a very red state last year largely because of the crime he was pardoned for committing.

The $2 million that George Soros poured into that election might have had something to do with it too...

That's what Trump's critics have been saying for the last two years. The same people who said he had no chance of being President.

You're right. We seriously underestimated the desperation of Republican voters.

I've never liked Trump, but even until recently I thought the idea that he was racist or had racist tendencies was overblown. I figured he was just pandering to his base and the evidence was more or less circumstantial but this goes a long way in cementing that I might have to adjust my viewpoint. I condemn this action.

I find Mr. Arpaio to be reprehensible.

Has former Sheriff Joe Arpaio expressed any remorse for defying a Federal Court ruling?

Has he apologized to the legal residents and citizens of Maricopa County who were illegally detained based on their appearance?

They were obviously desperate if Trump was the only candidate they could come up with to represent them and their political party, least of all to represent their evangelical Christian faith.

I think he's enjoying crapping on the Republican party's reputation, but isn't realizing how much of it is smearing onto him. He's basically trolling.

Trump was always going to pardon his #1 partner in the birther movement. I just don't understand how they can be so stupid as to not wait until after the sentencing. After all this 85 year old might not have gotten any jail time.

I'm an evangelical Christian, and that man does not represent me. I had liked Pence, to tell the truth, on account of how I'd thought he was genuine about being a man of faith, but have soured on him.

"The president of the United States just sent a startling signal that it’s OK to blatantly ignore the lawful order of a federal judge."
Yeah, that's the really big deal here. Not the political effect, if any, or even the racist angle. If federal judges can't enforce their court orders, then what's the point in giving them the authority to decide constitutional matters? Flagrant contempt for the Constitution here.
