It was a beautiful day in central Texas as we hit a record high temperature of 82 degrees.

Wow! - Turn on the AC.

It's 38F here today in Central Oklahoma. The weatherman says to expect freezing rain tonight and tomorrow. Our only worry is loss of power during the ice storm. Otherwise, we are ready and have everything we need.

We're supposed to be in the middle of a major freezing rain and ice storm, but it hasn't materialized yet. I'm not complaining. It's 29F right now in Central Oklahoma.

what do you have for back up power in case the lines go down?

Our pipes often freeze and the water mains break....

do you have water and food, plus batteries and a weather radio?

when there are no phones, we can always use walkie talkies-yes?

My heroes are Red Cross Workers who help us when we have natural disasters and other weather related problems here in the states.

You can get a smoke detector from them too.

Too many unnecessary deaths from house fires in this cold weather, especially from children is heart breaking.

Having enjoyed the "warmer indoors in the milder weather" phase I was astounded yesterday evening (whilst feeling warm indoors) to look outside and find that it had snowed! I love snow, so was quite happy especially as the house was comfortable (despite the heating not being any higher ). It was very pretty on the hills today but, although it was pleasant here, some places have had disruption and the East of England has had severe flood warnings with some people having to evacuate their homes.

Sleet/Freezing rain tonight. I'm driving along for awhile tonight and I think it must be raining pretty hard because of the sound of the drops hitting my car, but my windshield remained perfectly dry. I've driven in freezing rain before, but I don't remember that aspect of it. I'm gathering that the frozen rain drops must have just bounced off my windshield and never got it wet.

Has anyone else ever experienced anything like that?

Well, I am in New Zealand, it is windy and on the cool side, however, it is summer, so we have been having warm days. It is OK, but to me, it should be winter like it is back home in America.

We don't have any back-up power. Our water pipes are pretty deep in the ground, so I don't think they will freeze, but water mains elsewhere can always break.

We have plenty of food for 4 or 5 days, a good weather radio and batteries, and cell phones. Our emergency water supply is our 40 gallon hot water tank. Our lighting would be candles and flashlights if the power goes out. I'm afraid that we would get a pretty bad grade for being prepared.

The first round of our ice storm hit to the North of us, but we are starting to get it now. It will probably be solid ice by morning. Everyone stay warm.

I wont use Kevin this time, I think I'll refer you to joyshirley, her weather sounds like mine.
357, it is good you don't have the ice, even though it is very cold, praying for you.

That's interesting, MW, that though our countries are so far apart and in totally different seasons, our day's weather was similar. Very cool. :)

Praying in agreement re the ice storm over there.

It probably was small hail or ice pellets. Freezing rain melts as it falls and will refreeze on contact with a cold surface, ice pellets (hail) stay frozen and will bounce off of the surface.

It's a pretty dreary morning here with fog and drizzle. The temperature is 61 and we are looking for a high of 70 today.
It could be a rough one tomorrow night, as we are expecting severe thunderstorms with possibly even tornadoes in the area.

There you go again Kevin, forecasting the weather here at my house, but for now the weather is just first rate.

I think that most of the rough winter weather hit to the North of us. We got the rain, but it isn't freezing. It's 31F here right now and expected to hit 33F tonight. A temperature of 28 or 29F would make our entire area an ice-skating rink. The weatherman calls for more rain on Sunday, but at 48F.
