I'm really not convinced that the American people wouldn't respond with a combination of grumping about the developments and a knee-jerk defense of anything that Beloved Leader decides to do--depending upon which side of the political aisle we're talking about, of course. Why would this particular move produce a different response than the previous ones?
because there are MANY people in this country who believe in what this country was built on and will fight for that freedom. I would be willing to fight ( and die) if need be for the freedom of this country and I am disabled.

I'm guessing everything will be fine at the conventions...

Like most other things, people will hype it up and claim that it's going to be WW3...but it'll go off without a hitch.
I guess we will find out; as you cannot deny there has been an AWFUL lot of craziness lately.

i live a block away from the Q (where the republican convention is being held in cleveland). my greatest concern at this point is that many of my favorite restaurants downtown are being "leased" for the week by the likes of twitter, CNN, etc and i will not be able to enjoy them during that time. this angers me...

and the idea that obama is trying to get the elections cancelled is just stupid.

I have been hearing much about Obama trying to cause enough issues to cancel the elections and stay in office...

Our civil war failed to be a large enough issue to suspend elections.

Wait, how can it since we have not had the second one yet (and hopefully will not).

I am misunderstand your second part of your post. Are you saying it is stupid to think/suspect that OR that it would be a stupid decision for him to make?

I was speaking of the one that actual happened, not the one of paranoid fantasy. If an active civil war in which a large number of states took up arms against the rest is insufficient to suspend elections what do you imagine the pardon of mediocrity in the oval office if going to do that will be worse than that?

Good point;even though the prior civil war was more like two countries fighting, but the union still had fighting going on.

Well, just because he did not does not mean someone else would not. Also, sense he was on the union side they were not the ones to start the war. The south broke up with them, as it were he did nothing (that I am aware of to encourage the dividision.

If Lincoln, the king of expand executive powers, didn't do it his successors don't worry me.

One portion of the country was in an open shooting war with another, it does not get any worse than that as far as disruptions to the norm. What do you imagine the justification will be when that was not sufficient?

I doubt that he'd try that, but I don't know what there is to stop him.
What there is to stop him is the FACT that there is no provision for him to continue in office after January 20, 2017 at 1200PM EST. He will CEASE to be US President at that time, and Paul Ryan --assuming he is still speaker of the House-- would become acting President. Martial Law notwithstanding.

After 1200PM on 20 January 2017 the US Military ceases to take orders from Barack Obama because he is NO LONGER US President. Martial Law notwithstanding.

There will be an election. There were elections in the midst of WWII so there is absolutely no Constitutional justification for suspending the elections. They were not suspended during the US Civil War.

Well, I am telling you if he tried that there would be war.
No, there would not be. The US Military would simply disregard the order. Who is going to make them obey it, seriously? Kinda hard to argue with them in light of the fact that they have all of the heavy guns.

Thankfully the senate can declare war, not the president.
Who declared war on the Confederate States of America? Since Lincoln did not recognise the Confederacy, how was there a quarum of Senators and Congressmen to make such a declaration? Aside from that, who declared war on North Korea or North Vietnam, or Iraq, or Afghanistan, or...

Lincoln didn't have any interest in suspending the election of 1868, did he? Anyway, he'd only recently been re-elected when he was assassinated.

Calvinist DL,

You mean that the Constitution would rightly confer the presidency upon the Speaker. But that's not the same as acting as president under some pretext or other.

Look, I don't think that this is going to happen; I was simply responding to the idea that if it did, the American people would immediately rise up ("go to war") to stop it. I don't think we would do that, not any more than we did something like that when Obama and previous presidents violated the Constitution. And of course there would be a lot of mumbo jumbo explanations about emergency measures and some obscure law being cited as backing blah blah blah for the incumbent to justify his actions and keep the issue in limbo awaiting a Supreme Court ruling.

Considering how the USA handled the New Orleans flooding, I doubt they will be able to set up the fema death camps in time.

Well, as I said it would be war plus if I really believed in something I may well be willing to go to trial. Remember, I said I would be willing to DIE for what was right if it came to that.
