  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That's right. Bacteria are dominating the world completely without inventions.

No, inventions are an indicator of dominant life forms as is art, mathematics, language, medicine, ect. Bacteria dominate in none of those areas.

Well, if we go with the 'sheer weight of numbers' definition of domination, then bacteria do have humans beat.

If we go with bacteria being dumb bacteria, humans have bacteria beat. Humans who view bacteria as the more advanced and dominant life form should maybe go live in a bacterial colony?

Bacteria have been around on this planet for practically it's entire existence, long before humans came on the scene and will very probably still be here long after we're gone as a species.
By the simplest biological definition, bacteria have us beat.

Bacteria hasn't created anything other than more bacteria. Humanity on the other hand has created much beyond themselves.

By the simplest criteria, no other life form comes close to the dominance of humans on earth.

Intellectually, yes, we do have bacteria beat.
But, as I said, in the simplest biological sense, living and creating offspring, bacteria do have us beat.

By the simplest criteria, no other life form comes close to the dominance of humans on earth.

The simplest criteria is to live and create offspring. Which bacteria have us beaten at. Humans need about 9 months to give birth to one or two offspring tops. Bacteria reproduce by osmosis, always doubling their number at an astronomical rate.

Dominance is about quality, not quantity. Humans pretty well rule the earth.

The simplest criteria for dominance is to find the life form which generally dominate other life forms. Humans are at the top of the list, nothing else comes close.

Dominance with regards to ecology is the predominance of one species other another in an environment. Simply put, there are more bacteria in the world, in more environments than us and in much more extreme environments than us. Bacteria have us beat.

Humans have dominance over other animals in urban environments.
In the water, a shark has dominance over a human.
In the air, an eagle has dominance over us.
In the savannah, a lion will have dominance over us.
In the jungle, a chimpanzee has dominance over us.
Dominance is a very subjective term, but in the biological sense, dominance is the simplest expression of the theory of evolution: the species which is the best adapted for it's environment will be dominant.

Nope. All bacteria does is exist. Humans, on the other hand, are productive like no other life form in their creativity. They dominate in every place they exist, not simply live to reproduce.

Apes are stronger, dogs are faster, ect. If humans wish to dominate the jungle, they will dominate the jungle, chimpanzee or no chimpanzee. If humans wished to destroy eagles, humans would destroy eagles...that's because humans are the dominant life form on earth. Chimps nor eagles will ever dominate anything other than what humans allow them to dominate.

You're not listening to me. In the most BASIC sense of biology, dominance is to live and to create offspring. On that simple, basic definition, bacteria have us beat. It's that simple. End of.

Sharks and other fish are more adapted for life in the water. We are not. Sharks and other fish have dominance of the water.

We can hunt other animals, we can destroy environments, yes. But if you took away that fact, we wouldn't have the dominance we have in the urban environments we have created.

No, you're not listening to me. Of all the life forms on earth, nothing compares to humans in their dominance of the earth. We're more inventive, creative, powerful and advanced than any other life form.

Right, we can destroy, modify and create environments....because we're the dominate life form on earth. Chimps exist in their environment because we, as humans, allow them to exist in their environments. If we chose to, we could dominate chimps to their extinction. Chimps on the other hand could never dominate humans to control and destroy them. That's because chimps are a much lessor life form. How about sharks? Again, if we wished, we as humans could begin a systematic elimination of sharks...because we're the dominate life form.

Chimps or sharks do not have the advanced capabilities seen in humanity as seen in it's creativity and inventiveness. Dominance belongs to humans with no other life form comparable to them.

Why not discuss this with bacteria?

I think a bacterium would have a better grasp of what I am saying.
So I will repeat: in the most BASIC biological sense, which is to live and create offspring, bacteria have us beat since they can produce offspring quicker and more numerous than humans can. That means, in the most basic biological sense, bacteria are the dominant life-form on the Earth.
Do you agree that, in the most basic biological definition of dominance, this is true?

You view them as the dominant life form on earth, even with their inability to communicate. I guess you can make them anything you wish.

Do you agree that no other life form dominates other life forms as humans do in an everyday, ruling and dominating sense?

I am not arguing with that definition. I am talking about the BIOLOGICAL definition however.

I'm arguing that when someone speaks of dominance, it's concerning the ability for that life form to rule, control other life forms.

In your silly world of dominance, cats and dogs dominate humans. Keep going, this is entertaining.
