I think if our nations language was Latin, we would all sound more intelligent.

For example take the following:

sic enim dilexit Deus mundum ut Filium suum unigenitum daret ut omnis qui credit in eum non pereat sed habeat vitam aeternam non enim misit Deus Filium suum in mundum ut iudicet mundum sed ut salvetur mundus per ipsum qui credit in eum non iudicatur qui autem non credit iam iudicatus est quia non credidit in nomine unigeniti Filii Dei

I don't know what it says, but it sounds brilliant. ;)

Yes, we should. Its been our de facto language for ages, and thanks to the Chinese not being able to use their own language effectively for computing combined with our business dealing with them, english is probably the most widespread language on the planet.

There are only 8 countries in the world without a national language.
Every first world country has a national language except the U.S. and Britain.

A national language can unite the people, why don't we have one on the federal level?

Hi,
Okay, but why English? Why not use American, thus the lift here is a ride maybe and not an elevator?
And, what about accepted regional dialects and languages, used in the cities and various parts of the Unites States. In Michigan, they don't have forests and creeks. The have woods and cricks.

What would change by "making English the official langue"? English is already the language used off-cially. For instance, laws are written in English - not in Swahili or Tagalog
That is a good reason to make it the OFFICIAL language. I heard an old man complain 25 years ago when this was a state referendum. He did not understand why we needed to do that, but I did. For these very reasons, it should be the official language, and let all the other issues line up behind that.

As a nation, English was chosen early on, but that was not the only language widely used. German had a strong base of support, but we eventually settled on using English. It is high time we make it official.

Hi,

While worrying about the language issue in America, why did God, assuming that all of you believe in Him, think to make language a confusion?

He did after all do that, again assuming that you believe in Him.

To further have us think, it is said twice, that then they spread.

Why, did God think spreading was so important?

@Avid: I think you misunderstand my question: What would change if English is made the "official Language"? Are you just asking for a law that says: "English is the official language of the US". Full stop.
Did not misunderstand. What would change is that someone dealing with our government is responsible for interpreting what they say, or what they hear, NOT the government itself. As was mentioned, we do not do these things in Tagalog, etc. If English is the official language, we then are NOT a Bilingual or Multilingual society, but we are, once again, a melting pot.

I'd welcome such a law. It would unite us, as was mentioned before by someone here.

The Bable story is an interesting one because it explicitly indicates that the deity wanted to sow discord among people. He actually was jealous of how people were working together and in order to stop all that nonsense, languages were "created".
Just to add confusion this conflicts with passages of earlier times which in there were "many tongues".

It seems to be just a reworking of an older Summarian tale of the Lord of Eratta - stuffed into the general Hebrew mythology as it has some good imagery.

Hi,

Please read Genesis 1:28.

Someone gave you an incorrect story on The Tower of Babylon issue.

This is hard Biblically.
A Blessing by God is also a Command by God.
That's the hard part. It is to see how, that is how God, Biblically treats that issue.

In Genesis 1:28, the Blessing included both Science, with the subdue the earth part, and spreading, with the fill the earth part.

In Genesis 9:1, without looking it up yet, I think that has A Blessing in it, with a fill the earth part also.
Those people at Babylon, did not want to spread. Our preachers and teachers, have said otherwise from time to time with me. Imagine your and my surprise, what it would be, if upon reading the actual accounts, if what you and I had heard from others, was not actually written that way.
I can't find anything, but their filure to spead as being their fault, in those word there, and it is said twice, that then they were spread.
LOVE,
...Mary., .... .

A thought for some who want English as the official language -- since this will be done by simple legislation, are you prepared, in 30 years, for the official language to be switched to Spanish when "Whites" are no longer the majority?

Seems to me, if you want English to be protected as the official language, it would have to be done by Constitutional Amendment. We've not been able to pass an official language law, there is just no way a Constitutional Amendment will pass.

Best I think you could ever hope for is English/Spanish dual official languages, like Canada is English/French. Of course, since the unspoken intent here is to generally denigrate Spanish speakers, I can't see that getting much support.

George Carlin advocated having an official language that all immigrants had to learn: Navajo.
