Your original question:

From this map, can we conclude that anyone who thinks California is connected to the rest of North American is actually lying and ignoring the obvious evidence that California is an island?

A person is not lying if they are just mistaken. Also, we now know that the map is not accurate.

How do you know that the map is not accurate?

Remember, we are in a thread where people reject observations of the world around them because it conflicts with what is written on a piece of paper.

Ahh, finally the point. I know because I have seen pictures, not calculations or theories. However, I believe in evolution and dont think Noah's flood was worldwide.

Considering Loudmouth is aiming his comments at creationists I completely agree, 'lost in space' comes to mind.

I had the feeling, from Loudmouth's other posts, that he was targeting Christians in general. But who can tell what he intended in this particular post?

The problem with accusing (unnamed) people of doing (unspecified) things is that it doesn't contribute to reasoned debate in the slightest way.

Would you ignore evidence from the real world because of what somebody wrote on a piece of paper?

That is the whole crux of the matter. Creationists would have to answer "yes", but they don't like stating it as baldly as that, because, well, it makes them look stupid.

Yes, I've read Korzybski's books.

I take it then, that you are accusing (unnamed) people of mistaking the map for the territory in (unspecified) ways? That's all rather vague and pointless.

Can you think of a better way to represent the fallacy of mistaking the map for the territory? I am always looking for better ways to communicate these ideas.

I second it.

As pointed out elsewhere, you do mistake the map for the territory. You reject observations of the world around you because they don't match up to your map. You would tell people that California really is an island because you have a map showing that California is an island, no matter what evidence they show you.

No.

Where does it say on that map that anyone who agrees with it is "lying and ignoring obvious evidence"?

Is this some kind of Joe ("He's Lying") Isuzu commercial?

Then why do you claim that we are wrong for following the objective data form the real world because it conflicts with what is written in the Bible?

You are making the same mistake.
