  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, I can still read my Bible I can still go to church without getting arrested which is good. I've been affected by atheists through public school and the internet. I've seen some of the most vile things said to Christians on YouTube. After awhile, I started really resenting the atheist philosophy, because of the amount of damage and pain it can cause. I will say it has shaken my faith but never destroyed it. In my serious times of doubt, God has always been there to grab my attention to not loose faith.

So this atheist 'interference' has, in fact, strengthened your faith?

We can't love our enemies if we don't have any, brother. ;)

It's a really bad idea to cruise the internet watching/reading atheist rants. I know you think it will sharpen you to understand the atheist POV, but really it's no different from sitting in a smoke-filled room as you try to keep from coughing in the hope that the experience will help you learn about smokers.

Be prepared to supply an answer when the time comes. That's it. A word God wants to give someone often has little to do with the 'logical' or 'clever' answer we think would be more effective. Meditate on the Lord, seek His voice in everything, and then let the unbelievers come and go. The rest of it is up to God to supply the answer He wants to give them.

It sounds like you've been affected because you got to thinking you could waltz into their midst and set them straight.

Not all atheists are hostile to Christianity. Many of them, probably a majority, don't care whether we serve God or not. The hostile ones simply get most of the publicity.

Perhaps it might be helpful to find and atheist forum and simply spend some time reading the posts without registering on the forum. You will see how atheists interact among themselves when they aren't involved in debating with Christians. If you understand more about them it might be easier for you to communicate with them. The forum on thethinkingatheist.com would be a good place for this.

You might find this helpful.

From atheism to Christianity | clydeherrin

In it two former atheists tell how they became Christians. This information might help you to find the best way to approach atheists with the gospel.

We ought to witness whether people want to listen or not.

Indeed.
"Witnessing directly" implied speaking to / preaching to atheists in relation to their potential peril.
Indirect witnessing via loving kindness, forbearance and charity though.....there's eloquent.

Ok so I want to poor out my heart on this subject because it's been bugging me ever since I had my last encounter with an atheist.
I'll be honest, I am terrified of witnessing to atheists. I have a very soft heart, and I get mad easily when an atheist tells me I am delusional and God is dead. I don't know why, but I get downright furious when someone says God is dead. It is the most disrespectful thing I have ever heard! I just wanna tape their mouth's shut so they can't say it anymore. What bugs me even more, are when they get media attention by attacking Christians for praying in public or displaying Christian literature. Every time I hear a story about Christians being persecuted atheists the anger in me gets all stirred up.

I just wish the atheists would go away, so we can worship God the way we want without them interfering. I must be feeling the same way the the Protestants did before they left England, France and Spain after the Reformation. Anyways, please I need some prayer and advice on how to deal with this. I'm to the point where I think everyone outside the church is an atheist. I've been bullied by atheism! Also, does anyone notice that atheism is one of the most tempting cults to get caught up in? It's like a spiritual black hole created by Satan.

Also, atheists need not apply on this thread....

I would suggest that you leave atheists alone. Everyone has a right to their opinion and perspective, and you are showing disrespect to non-believers by becoming angry with them because they will not agree with you. I'm not surprised that you can't win people over when your perspective is that you want to tape their mouths shut and you want them to go away. Is that loving behavior? People aren't stupid. They get that you don't like them.

Atheism, btw, is not a cult. You need to look up the definition of cult.

I hate to say it, but this time is vacation compared to what is coming. Soon, "fundamentalist evangelical Doomsday Christians" will be the new "Islamic Terrorist." It's already in the script. As far as witnessing, I would say at this point just plant a seed - say whatever you have to say with no intention of changing a mind. Whoever hears you (and the Word of God) is responsible for that information - whether they believe or not. Once you tell someone a testimony s/he is responsible for any and all information received. Just plant a seed, and relish in this [relatively] easy time of being a Christian.

First of all, AndersonKC, thank you for this thread. I was thinking of making one like it.

It's hard not to show disdain for an atheist who comes to a Christian forum with the sole intent of preaching his ungodly doctrine to undermine the faith of others. In particular, there have been many who have posted as Christians asking some question about the nature of God; usually citing events in the Old Testament such as the Passover to accuse God of being a mass murderer and worse than Satan. Within a few posts they become "disillusioned" with Christianity and change their icon to atheist because of the actions of the Christian God and the intolerant attitudes of Christians. These people are not only liars, they are doing the work of Satan himself by coming "in sheep's clothing" to spread false doctrine and try to lead Christians from their faith. These are the deceivers. They may pretend to be more moral and tolerant than God, but the reality is that they are profoundly evil.

The second group of atheists that are difficult to tolerate are the one who come here to constantly attack anyone who doesn't buy into the lie of evolution. For these people, anyone who believes in God and believes as the Scriptures teach that He created the world in six days is either a complete moron or an uneducated rube. For them evolution is a religion which they feel must be preached to all the ignorant Christians who dare teach that man was created rather than evolving over billions of years. They are usually the first to insult the education or intelligence of anyone who disagrees with them. They demand that all arguments be on their terms, based on their interpretations of science and based on findings only published in evolution friendly publications. These people very frequently resort to blaspheme. Since I won't discuss things with blasphemers, when they do that I simply ignore them. Perhaps that isn't the best way of dealing with them, but as a Christian I refuse to give voice to those who want nothing more than to commit blaspheme against my Father.

All that said, these people are here. They are real people on the other side of the computer screen. They are lost in their own sin and condemned already. The wages of their own sin is death, and there is no gift of God because they refuse to believe in Him. If we don't reach them, perhaps nobody will. So even though they are here to convince us that God is real, it is incumbent on us to do what we can to win them over to God. I think any insight any of us have into accomplishing this would be most welcomed.

This is supposed to be a place where Christians can talk among themselves and seek advice for troubling issues. It's amazing how Christians can go online to confess all sorts of addictions/sins to which people react with a yawn, but as soon as they admit to being angry at an unbeliever, they're suddenly pond scum. And it's really amazing how someone can all but reach through a computer to tape someone's mouth shut to teach them a lesson that it's wrong to tape someone's mouth shut.

As for persecution among a majority, ruling minorities exist all over the world. Majority status doesn't always guarantee power.

But really, that is neither here nor there. The point is that a Christian came to a Christian only forum to discuss something that made him angry. People are not stupid, indeed.

Indeed. Anger has its place.

As does intolerance. Tolerance of evil is not a virtue. Jesus displayed both anger and intolerance at the money changers who defiled the temple, and in that showed us that righteous indignation at the defiling of things sacred is acceptable. While we don't want to stoop to their level, we do need to stand up in defense of our faith.

Jesus was harsh toward religious hypocrites and he was kind to ignorant people.

He liked to put hypocrites in their place. He was the most harsh to those who defiled the temple. In most cases ignorance is simply being exposed to something you haven't learned. With some, it seems, ignorance is a lifelong dwelling place.

Well if God is dead, He must have lived once. This means He did exist. That's a start.
Some believe that He never was at all.

In my experience, the most upset and aggressively atheist people are the ones that finding it harder and harder to deny God's existence.

The hardest person, I find, to talk or debate with, is not the one who doesn't believe in God. It's the one who knows that God exists yet is trying to convince themselves that He doesn't.
