Declining to violate your religious beliefs does not make one a jerk. Forcing someone to violate their religious beliefs does make one a jerk

No one is forcing you to be a wedding photographer if that violates your religious beliefs. If you don't want to photograph weddings, then don't be a wedding photographer.

Nobody is forcing homosexuals to have ceremonies either

What will end up happening is that eventually gays will have an entire network of professionals who will help each other without having to deal with prejudice and discriminatory people. Soon there will be a gay television network, and the 'wholesome' folk will criticize this as prejudice and discrimination against 'wholesome' folk.

And just for the record, it wasn't a wedding

Religious beliefs do not allow you to flout laws that have absolutely nothing to do with religion. Hence why Rastafarians still get arrested for marijuana usage.

No laws were flouted. The photogrpaher however is being told that she must violate her religious beliefs if she intends to remain in business, liberalism thus being an authoritarian, intolerant philosophy

If she doesn't like photographing weddings, then perhaps a new career is a wise move.

The court disagrees.

Why? The state has a law forbidding discrimination on the base of sexual orientation.

As I said before, no one reconsiders their relationship just because they happen to encounter a bigot or two.

I am a big fan of McCarthy and think he is treated unfairly.

Really? I think he and HUAC treated a lot of people in this country unfairly, to the point where they were deprived of the right to make a living in their chosen professions.

MachZero: Declining to violate your religious beliefs does not make one a jerk.

It would depend on what the beliefs in question happen to be. If a Church of Jesus Christ Aryan member were discriminating against Jews in business dealings they would be acting like a Jerk. The fact that they choose to follow a faith that gives religious consecration to their hatred wouldn't get them off the hook for being one. It would merely add to the jerk-ness.

Forcing someone to violate their religious beliefs does make one a jerk

That would also depend on the belief in question. Obviously in this case no one is being forced to open a business and deal with the public so as to put themselves under consumer protection laws. There are, however, instances where it is correct to force people not to follow their beliefs. If a persons religious beliefs demanded that they kill as many people as possible then it would be right to force them not to follow it [just to use a blatantly obvious example].

Just a side not on this.

When I was in College I learned that 2 professors at my college had suffered because of McCarthy. Men of character who were in no way communist sympathizers but who refused loyalty oaths on principle.

I do NOT think it is coincidence that about the time these men retired PC started to take off.
