  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Answers To Atheism

I'm currently reading a book called The Dawkins Letters-Challenging Atheist Myths by David Robertson. It is an excellent response to Dawkin's The God Delusion.
Does anyone know of a book and/or website that answers atheism in a comprehensive way?

You know atheism is just the non-belief in any gods; right?

Yes, i was an atheist myself and a 'disciple' of Dawkins & co.

Perhaps that was the problem. I was a Christian, but I guess you now consider me an atheist. There is no need to make yourself the disciple of anyone. I have never read any of those four and I don't intend to except perhaps for Sam Harris, but that is for his morality+science not his atheism.

As it says you are Catholic here is a link that backs up Christianity and evolution together: BioLogos

Mind me asking why you became a Christian after being a disciple of Dawkins and co? No need for a long answer if it would derail the thread.

It is a long story, but the late Peter Steele, a musical hero of mine, summed it up quite well:
“There are no atheists in foxholes, they say, and I was a foxhole atheist for a long time. But after going through a midlife crisis and having many things change very quickly, it made me realize my mortality. And when you start to think about death, you start to think about what’s after it. And then you start hoping there is a God. For me, it’s a frightening thought to go nowhere. I also can’t believe that people like Stalin and Hitler are gonna go to the same place as Mother Teresa[

I too my brother, share a similar story.

In my youth, I heartily studied string theory and quantum mechanics, hoping, if by chance, I might be able to come up with an explanation of the universe sans God. It was my hope that I might be able to find a way that the cosmos could have began apart from God so that I would not need not appeal to Him as the Cause. I read Stephen Hawking's works and I came to the point where I wanted a life without God... and I got what I wanted.

Needless to say, it was not a life that was really desirable.

But God was merciful to me and since That Day He has shown me wondrous and marvelous things and I am so happy to hear that God has worked in your life as well.

I love you and hope to speak with you again my brother.

This is IMO is the main reason people believe in god. It's a coping mechanism.

Is it not comforting to believe that you will live an a great place with your loved ones?

And it's just like what you said about Stalin or Hitler. Is it not comforting to believe that, say for example, this Holmes guy who massacred people at the "Batman" movie is going to burn in hell?

Being scared of reality is no reason to make up fiction. But if you need it, I truly understand.

Ultimately, just be a good person. Condone good qualities and teach them.

Atheism isn't for everybody. If you are a better person due to religion then be a better person.

So because it gives you hope.

Ah, if only reality would simply bend to our desires. A final death is inconvenient? Then death must not be final.

As for me, I'm 45 years old and am certainly aware that I will die one day, but it is not a frightening thought to me that my death may be final. I don't want an untimely death, and I certainly don't want a painful death, but death itself (as nonexistence) is not frightening to me at all. It is, at most, an unpleasant thought, because I love life and wouldn't mind a few extra millenia. However, death is not something that is worth dwelling on.

And we start with an erroneous statement, there definitely are atheists in foxholes.

But after going through a midlife crisis and having many things change very quickly, it made me realize my mortality. And when you start to think about death, you start to think about what’s after it. And then you start hoping there is a God. For me, it’s a frightening thought to go nowhere.
It's interesting how emotive this is, and how it appeals to self-preservation rather than validity.

I also can’t believe that people like
Stalin and Hitler are gonna go to the same place as Mother Teresa.”[
Well, depends if God forgave them or not. This notion that everyone gets theirs under Christianity is a fantasy by definition.

I have seen the "no atheists in foxholes" line turned around quite effectively to "there are no Christians in fox holes" after all if god is protecting you or paradise is one bullet wound away why oh why would you jump in that hole when the fire fight starts?
