It also helps that in those days most of the countries that are currently kicking the US's lower posterior region were incredibly poor, poorly governed, and war-torn/recovering from WWII.

It also helps that the tests themselves and the material covered weren't as complex as they currently are, and that the middle class was huge with little stratification of wealth (with the resulting glut of well-incomed kids with parents that cared greatly about education) .
