• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The idea of refuting somone elses ideas, or backing up your own, is that you use recognised authorities on an issue. With respect, you have to maintain some integrity in your quotes if you are to be taken seriously in how you back up your arguments. After all one could easily disprove that Yeshua ever existed by using quotes on the internet. The fact that they are there doesn't make them right. I am equally sure you do not take just the bits of The Book that you agree with, leaving the rest to one side, do you?

True. I'll try to check source authors better.

Some would appreciate an original thought. It seems most of your content is copied and pasted. I'm curious and would like to ask a question... Have you actually read the Talmud? I mean, you seem very confident to speak to it's validity... one would only hope you've put the time in to be qualified to have said opinion.

I've found that it's much better to preface statements with "I believe", "I think", "I've been told", "my understanding is". Especially when there's a chance I'm wrong. And also especially when commenting in opposition to someone else's statement. No one likes to be slapped in the face and told they are wrong, but most of us are mature enough to be gently turned to looked at another possibility.

I wasn't wanting to make a witch hunt re my comments about sources - just trying to be helpful because doubtful sources can attract a comment that the poster doesn't know what they are talking about. On the other hand, you can provide all the authoritative sources you like and some people will still argue the toss with you until you give in or walk away! On some internet fora they call it flaming. :)

No, I didn't see anything there aimed at me. Be at peace on this!

Most of my arguments against the talmud so far have been on its history, and that of the people who wrote it, not its content. That calls for more historical data than opinions. Would I need to study the koran or the book of Mormon to know they are not of YHWH? Both are based somewhat on the bible, and both contain some elements of truth.

What makes them false is that they claim the authority of the creator (under whatever name they use), and mix truth with falsehood. Israel's sin when they made the golden calf was mixing Egyptian idolatry with worship of YHWH, and he almost destroyed them over it.

I don't know what a "sub-thread" is? Can you explain it? Maybe I know it by another name?

If you view the forum in threaded or hybrid mode, you can see how posts relate to one another. The result is a sort of "tree" display. A particular branch of the tree is generally referred to as a sub-thread. The main thread is the entire tree, starting from the first post.

My point was simply to express appreciation for the edifying and courteous discussion going on.

the only people who read and study the Talmud on this forum are Rabbinic Jews and myself.
Well... not quite. But I'm new, so I don't blame you for thinking so.

Always searching for something new to learn?:wave:

I don't really have to search hard. It's more like stuff just beats me over the head from time to time. Anybody whose eyes and ears (and heart) are open will find plenty to keep the mind active.
