You said it didn't do anything to stop crimes, that was untrue. If you don't want me correcting you, don't make mistakes in the first place.

Please don't be obtuse. You can't cancel an execution after it has taken place.

No more than you can cancel imprisonment after it has taken place. You can cancel what hasn't happened yet, not what has already happened. A day spent in prison away from one's family, friends, and job, is a day you cannot give back.

You can cancel imprisonment once it has taken place. You can release the prisoner.

You can't cancel an execution one it had taken place. You can't undo death.

I understand that, but you can free the prisoner.

Not if they've served their sentence. Nor can you cancel the portion of their sentence they already served.

And we've canceled executions. People have been taken off death row. They'll never get back the days of the life they spent in prison though, no matter what future punishments they were spared.

Eh, if a person is wrongfully imprisoned, they do at least often have access to a sizeable cash settlement. You can't give them back the years but you can at least give them -some- kind of compensation for it.

BEFORE they were executed. What about afterwards?

I'm not talking about erasing the past. There is a difference between imprisonment and execution regarding the rest of a person's life. THAT'S the issue.

...And what about all the people who died in prison before they could be released?

Has everyone gone completely mental?

Yes, there is a chance of dying in jail. Compare that to being executed. What are your odds of survival then?

Fairly good, seeing as I have never killed anyone and don't plan to anytime soon.

Yes, but an execution is not necessarily morally equivalent to a murder.

eudaimonia,

Mark
Sorry but execution is murder albeit a legal one. Murder is murder my friend and so long as we allow for such heinous things as capital punishment to continue then we are no better than savages.

Execution is KILLING, murder is necessarily illegal. If it is legal, it CANNOT be murder!
So every person executed including the legal executions by Hitler and Stalin Pol Pot, Idi Amin etc, were not murders:confused: People are executed in Iran simply for being Gay.

Executions are MURDER!

Any country that applies capital punishment is a savage and uncivilised country!
