  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Some Christians don't believe in demons

Devil loves it when people think he's an innocuous cartoon character with a pointy tail..
that way they wont stand against him and he has them by the tail, to do as he
sees fit, captive, trapped, living a life filled with bondage.
I see many many Christians living this way.. Poo pooing "spiritual things".
They think that the seen things are more powerful or permanent I guess.
When in truth, the unseen CONTROLS the seen...

imo

(cool thread!)

Have any of you run into christians who feel demons are simply a way Jesus and his disciples helped people deal with psychiatric problems by calling them demons and casting them out, was simply a way to teach those backward superstitious people how to deal with psychosis

Modern medical science has pretty much done away with demon possession. A brain scan, for example, can point to the exact location were epilepsy resides. Epilepsy, in Jesus' days, was considered a form of demon possession simply because they didn't know what caused it. Well, now we do know. My ex wife was epileptic and it was pretty frightening when she had a fit, so it's no wonder ancient people called it demonic.

I've also noticed that in the Old Testament demon possession was rarely, if ever mentioned. Yet when Jesus came along it seemed demon possession was rife.

Perhaps you have it backwards..
They may be able to see the epilepsy but that doesnt mean that it's not demonic in origin.
Jesus cast it out.. was he confused?
I don't think so.

The reason no possession was mentioned in the Old Testament was simply due to something called progressive revelation. That is why satan and his cronies almost never appear directly in the Old Testament, despite having more reign then than they do now. The people simply did not know they were there.

Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.
Matthew 17:18

Scripture tell us that the epileptic boy had a demon and he was healed once the demon left.
Now does that mean everyone who has epilepsy has a demon?
IMO No.

I agree with a lot of this

However, demons are spirits. If the sickness can be healed by medicine, seen on an x-ray, or by blood test chances are that the sickness is not from a demon.

Medical science cannot cast out demons.

I'll share what I believe.
Had the boy with the epilepsy been alive today, you'd be able to see it
on the CT (or however they "see" it nowdays) and Jesus would still have
driven it out. OH, but today, they'd give drugs instead..

Depression: had King Saul been around today, he'd be on prozac too!!!
As it was, iirc, he was hounded by demons and soothed by music (his prozac! lol)

IMO

In your opinion, can medicine "heal" a possessed person? (honest question)

Methinks you might be using the term "Christian" too loosely. Having said that, I've met MANY such people. The irony? It's demons that blind them to the truth. Anyhow, I've both been delivered from many demons (literally, not figuratively) in the past and have personally cast out many demons in Jesus Christ's name (my username wasn't chosen lightly). In both situations, I've seen the immediate, long-lasting results from things that previous kept myself or others in bondage or torment for years. The Bible has it right...

Did you ever have a demon while you were a Christian? (honest question)

OpenDoor: Many. (honest answer) There are many who erroneously believe that once someone becomes a Christian, all demons that might have been in them automatically leave. Where do we find that in scripture? In fact, if that were so, then who would deliverance be for? Careful...think before you answer...

What I always had a hard time understanding is if someone has the Holy Spirit living in them they are clean, become part of the body of Christ, and are God's temple. If a demon was in the person then they would be made unclean (right?)

Cant really say .. I know nothing about epilepsy.
How bout what I do know about.. anxiety.
I believe that my anxiety is caused by demonic activity.
We as people are not just one dimensional. I have a
body, I am a spirit, i have a soul.. etc (you get where I'm going)
So.. let's say that I have a "spirit" of anxiety.
Is there only one way to cast that thing out? Or are there
other ways to be "delivered" of bondage to fear...?
Gotta turn to Scripture
Hint: imo, there are more than one.
(Resist the devil and he will FLEE from you)
In your opinion, can medicine "heal" a possessed person? (honest question)
IMO, medicine would mask more often than not and the demonic
rears it's head when the bandaid is removed but yeah! Docs can
heal something that was inflicted by satan. God can use docs.

Remember the story about the cleanly swept house?
Take drinking for example. I know a lot of folks who used
to drink. Heck, I drank to escape from the time I was about
14 years old! And they go to AA or try some sort of behavioral
modification techniques and are never bothered again.
Because if you resist that demon, it will leave but if you leave
yourself open to it =it might come back.

Yeah, there's more than one way to skin a rabbit...... imo.

OMGosh, I am so sorry. I evidently got off track here
and so will finish my thought
I believe that the demonic actually affects the phisiological
aspects.
As a child i lived in great fear of danger daily and so I was
hyper vigilant.. iow, my "flight or fight " mechanism was
in an "on" position 24/7..
As an adult, even though the danger was removed, the on
switch doesn't seem to work.. Is it demonic? IS it physiological?
Or ...is it now a symptom of .. and so both...
INTERESTING!
There's a book i read as a young adult called "Spiritual Warfare
for the Wounded" and it really helped me to sort things out
at that time. I recommend it if you can still find it.
(One of those books people never return kwim?) lol
