• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi All,

Just wondering about how you're doing with a diabetic diet, or are you. I've found that I do well with it when I'm not home, but when I'm home I really struggle to manage it and eat as I should.

Anyone else doing well or struggling? What works for you when you're at home?

The person who have Diabetes should be more conscious for daily food. The key points which I want to discuss over hre are:
1)People with diabetes can use a modified version of MyPyramid to help them spread the amount of carbohydrates they eat all day.
2)Food Guide contains the same foods your family eats. No need to eat special foods.

Hello. When Hubby was diagnosed with late onset Type 1 (aka Type 1.5) diabetes two years ago, his medical advisors told him to start eating the way I do. I lost 50lbs following the South Beach Diet and am in maintenance. South Beach emphasizes eating 4.5 cups of non-starchy veggies every day, low-fat meats and "good carbs" from whole grains, beans, lentils and milk. Look for the books and cookbooks at your local library. You can also get a lot of free information and support on this way of eating -- especially if weight loss is a goal, too -- on Sparkpeople.com where I am a member of the South Beach Diet Lifestyle team.

I have more trouble when I am away from home because then I can eat at fast food places and it isn't always easy to tell how many carbs are in foods at some places.

I have been doing better in the last 6 months or so and A1C is getting better.

JSimms,

A really good choice when you eat out at a fast food place is chili. When I go to Wendy's I get a small chili and pour it over a side salad with no dressing. Yummy! You can find nutrition information for most fast food chains online and you can buy books to keep in your glove box or backpack, too.

That would depend on what type of diabetic you are, most type 2 are not in need of taking insulin whiles type 1 are completely insulin dependent and with this need to avoid eating/drinking the wrong foods as it would force a large amount of insulin intake.

People do not "get" Diabetes, they have it.
New research have shown that you either have it, or not. And the Type 2 Diabetics we have didn't "get it" because of their obesity but it got revealed because of their obesity and they had Diabetes.

Eating moderately and keeping a good health is universal, and Type 2 (what the ordinary folks would say "fat people" have) which is what most in our nation got, is Self-Inflicted IN THAT BECAUSE of their obesity and bad health, poor lifestyle (lazy, no exercise etc) they SEEMINGLY "get" Diabetes, but the truth is they had it, it was just that it did not show or appear until a certain time.

Type 1, which is generally not seen as genetical (Type 2 is more likely to spread continue in the family) but could (chance) and which is a different type of Diabetes become Insulin dependent by default and die without Insulin injection, whiles Type 2 can, almost universally, simple live a healthy life and their Diabetes would not even be noticeable.

I second the Wendy's chili! I can have the small with either a side salad (hold the crutons) or a burger/chicken sandwhich done as a lettuce wrap (ask for extra lettuce and just toss the bun if you'd rather not bother asking). Throw the bun away immediately to keep you from losing willpower and having some.

The fiber in the chili cancels out most of the carbs and it's quite tasty. The little packs of chili sauce are about 2 carbs a piece, so I usually have one.

This is a very good topic and the responses are excellent and appreciated:) I and my wife are both diabetics type 2. We have attended numerous seminars sponsered by the local hospials and have given us a lot of insight in what and not to do's As for eating at home we do pretty well as we watch carfully what we eat and watch the carbs. My wifes biggest problem she loves fruit.....and could eat a ton of it.......all in all our health is good, thanks to the Lord:amen:

EVERYONE should eat the way a diabetic should eat. Its about having a healthy lifestyle and that is good for all.

That is generally good advice, I think. Of course everyone has different health considerations, but the same diet that they recommend for those who have diabetes is the very one that can keep you from getting it in the first place! It can keep you from getting a bunch of other health problems as well. As far as I can tell, there is nothing magic about it, though -- the best diet for diabetes is simple a healthy, balanced diet that does not send your blood sugar careening all over the place.

diabetics should also have discipline to stick to a diabetic diet and if they're not taking -statin drugs, then maybe omega 3 fish oil supplements will help them protect their hearts tremendously due to its cardioprotective qualities. it lowers triglycerides or bad cholesterol. my mother is on omega 3 and it has done her really good.
