  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The whole house smells good :) It's hard not to eat it! You make a caramel with brown sugar, honey and butter, then stir that with two lightly beaten eggs through flour, baking powder and cinnamon, add two diced pears, arrange another pear over the top in slices made to form a flower, spread with apricot jam for a glaze and cook. Mmmmmm.

You're killing me over here! I want some! :yum:

Well...my grandaughter is 7 months old already, my oldest daughter is pregger with my 2nd grand baby...she's officially a civilian again June 4  so I can sleep and breathe a huge sigh of relief there...

my youngest is 12 now...and on the honor roll and secured a slot in this year's talent show...she's singing an Amy Lee song...(big surprise there LOL)

Me? I'm happily divorced, regained my maiden name and enjoying my job, the gardens, and well life in general ;) How've you been EC?
Woohoo! Another civilian in the world! :p

I've been busy with school, work, inadequate amount of sleep, supporting a Starbucks addiction, all the while keeping my girlfriend happy.

That and trying to learn how to drive and the rules of the road so I can have a driver's license that I've needed for a LONG time!

Yeah... that's about it...

Photini, I'm about to make it worse...here's a picture :D It's a bit dark because I put double the amount of jam on top (oops) which made it have to cook longer. I can't tell you if it tastes good or not yet though :)

Yum, cake...it is FREEZING today. I'm making a vegie and lentil soup for dinner.

You have been busy!

Remember...caffeine isn't really a good substitute for a good night's rest.

Good luck on the driving exam ;)

::drools::

It's chilly here right now, but the temp is supposed to rise very quickly and get into the 80s today. Yay!

It's very late autumn here, and it feels like it - the days are crisp and the nights make my bones ache. I'm wearing several layers but I'm still cold. I'm swapping the sheets out for flannel ones tonight, I got cold last night, and even my independent diva fluffball cat refused to get off my bed and go outside today

You know it is cold when your animals don't want to go outside!

I do, it's in metric measurements though. I can give it and you could probably figure out a conversion? Make sure with the teaspoons and tablespoons that you convert those too, metric ones are different to standard/imperial. Here you are:

Honey & Pear Cake
serves 6 (I doubt this, it's really sweet so i'd go for small slices)

150g butter
1/2 cup (80g) honey
1/2 cup (110g) dark brown sugar
1 3/4 (260g) plain flour
2tsp baking powder
1tsp ground cinnamon
3 pears (in season now, yay)
2 eggs, lightly beaten
2tbsp apricot jam, warmed
pure icing sugar, to dust

Preheat oven to 180C/160C Fan
Grease & line a 23cm springform pan
Combine butter, honey & sugar in a small saucepan on low. Heat, stirring, until a smooth caramel forms (and try not to eat it all)
Remove pan from heat and cool sauce for 10min.
While the sauce cools, sift flour, baking powder & cinnamon in a large bowl.
Peel, core & dice 2 pears.
Add egg and caramel to dry ingredients & mix until well combined then stir in diced pear.
Pour into prepared pan and smooth surface.
Peel & core remaining pear, and thinly slice lengthways.
Arrange pear slices in a fan (half pear slices overlapping in a circle, like a flower - see picture) pattern.
Brush pear with warm jam.
Bake for 1hr, covering with foil if browning too quickly, until an inserted skewer comes out clean.
Cool cake in pan and store in an airtight container.
Dust with icing sugar around pear fan before serving.
Stores in an airtight container for up to a week.

I was more than happy to kiss winter good-bye this year. I hate cold weather.

Agreed, especially after the BRUTAL month and a half of all Feb and half of March where we were burried under 2 foot of snow in Pittsburgh.
