  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mccain's pick just confirms to me what poor judgment he may have.

LOL. so says the Democrat.

I think it makes McCain a genius. Consider the arguments AGAINST McCain thus far:

* He's too old. (Palin is 44 years old)
* McCain is awkward in his speeches. (Palin was a former Miss Alaska, and is very good at the podium)
* McCain is a white male. (Palin is a woman and the mother of a handicapped child)
* McCain is "Old School" Washington D.C. (Sarah Palin is a State Governor, and Washington outsider)

In addition to those points, consider these:

* She's very solid on core conservative issues.
* She's a lifetime member of the NRA.
* She's a hunter and a fisherman (fisherwoman?).
* She identifies strongly with small businesses, and she is LOVED by them in Alaska.
* She took on energy policy in arguably the most important State in America for oil.
* She increased oil growth and revenues, and she did it WITHOUT sending the business to big oil.
* She made her reputation by taking on government corruption, running against an incumbent Republican and winning to become Governor. She then cleaned house and got rid of entire boards full of corrupt politicians in her State.
* She's a very strong woman - intelligent, independent, and smart.

She's a very good balance for McCain, and she seems to me to be very nearly as tough. She's a straight talker, and she doesn't shy away from a fight.

What's more, her downsides are minimal. Obama really doesn't have room to talk when it comes to her lack of Washington experience. After all, he's only got a year or so himself, and he's running to lead the nation. She's not. She's been actively involved in National level issues to include pork barrel spending, and she's playing second fiddle to a guy with decades of solid and proven experience.

I personally think this is a great choice, and I think she's a great person to occupy high public office - woman or not. She's a forceful personality, and she's someone who's reputation has been built on ethics and toughness.

I'll be interested to see where this goes now.

If she's a creationist then I'd be worried about her integrity. One can only hold that position through either ignorance or dishonesty (frequently both), and neither is a good trait.

I'd like to add the obligatory;

She's hot.

I get the feeling that republicans would back anyone that Mccain put out.

Has Obama said anything about Palin yet?

I just find it hypocritical that Mccain's ads mud-sling at Obama about his inexperience, and yet, he selects the most inexperienced VP in this century.

Doesn't that seem odd to you. Tell you something though, Mccain won't be able to use that one against Obama any longer.

I guess it's my own prejudice or something, but she reminds me of my son's kindergarten teacher.

But seriously, creationists and fundamentalists want simplicity. Two people. Everything perfect. A snake destroyed it all. Lesson: avoid snakes. And apples. And complex thinking.

It's like a lot of us who want a magic pill. How about a magic pill to make us instant millionaires or to make everyone love us? Everyone wants to believe that too.

Maybe, at this point I'm not sure they have much choice. It's not like most of us who are voting Obama are going to opt not to back his VP choice. When "backing" really comes down to will the VP choice make us not case a vote?

Many McCain voters will be voting by default as in "anyone but Obama" regardless of his VP choice.

Has Obama said anything about Palin yet?

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/08/29/1306998.aspx
"I haven't met her before. She seems like a compelling person, obviously a terrific story, personal story. And you know, I'm sure that she will help make the case for the Republicans," he told a small group of reporters on Friday. "Unfortunately, the case is more of the same. And so ultimately John McCain is at top of ticket. As I indicated in my speech last night, I think that he wants to take the country in the wrong direction. I'm assuming Gov. Palin agrees with him in in his policies."
He said the fact that a woman had been chosen as the vice presidential candidate of a major party "is one more hit against that glass ceiling."
"I congratulate her and look forward to a vigorous debate," he said. "I'm pleased with my choice for vice president Joe Biden. I think he's the man who can help me guide this country in a better direction and help working families."

The TV ad response from Obamas campaign was that no matter who Mccain picks his real partner is Bush.. and its just more of the same.

I just find it hypocritical that Mccain's ads mud-sling at Obama about his inexperience, and yet, he selects the most inexperienced VP in this century.
The obama camp said the same thing... that puts an end to the "experience" argument. Also I read that McCain met Palin only once before making the VP decision... that strikes me as strange.

Yes, that's it... strange.

It reminds me of when Bush tired to pick his secretary to be the newest supreme court judge.

Hopefully Hilary's voters aren't stupid enough to cut off their nose to spite their face. And it's pretty obvious that he picked her to court the Right Wing Christian vote. She's very pro-life, anti-gay marriage, pro-gun, pro-death penalty, pro-Intelligent Design, and pro-Big Oil. She's like Rick Santorum in a skirt.

When have women failed to do this? I'd vote for her instead of McCain. I had originally planned on sitting out the election but now I'm hoping she gets a shot at the oval office. I am not alone in the disgruntled conservative area. She will bring in the votes. I don't see how Obama can off set this.

McCain has made a very cynical attempt to get the vote of the feminists that supported Hillary in the Democratic primaries. Hopefully, most feminists will realise that having a womyn in power is not as important as having someone in power of any sex or gender that will support wimmin.

Even if the Republican candidate was a womyn, the Democrats are still the party that will support wimmins' rights much more.
