  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You really think that a six-sentence post with precisely two scientific terms - "K/Ar" and "decay" - is too difficult for a 53-year old man to grasp?

AV is proud of his ignorance, Inan. It's not our fault that he refuses to listen, refuses to read, refuses to learn and then throws childish insults to posters who underestimated the extent of his self-inflicted illiteracy.

I don't call that "debating" when I ask how many times little Johnny went around on the Merry-Go-Round and get a lecture on Centrifugal Force.
Go ask RichardT that question and he'll probably tell you that it was the earth that was spinning under the Merry-Go-Round and not the other way around. ;)

Blue Blaze!!! That's because you don't understand the principles of the scriptures. You have the wrong interpretation. As many do.

Right. Except for you, of course.

Please. Your interpretation is as fallible as anyone else's. Yours is no more correct than theirs.

This thread has gotten unbelievable --- simply unbelievable.

I'll be honest with you guys --- you've just opened up a credibility gap with me that you could shove Pluto through.

Let us turn to the words of Celsus from the 2nd Century AD:

Celsus said:
"the following are the rules laid down by them. Let no one come to us who has been instructed, or who is wise or prudent (for such qualifications are deemed evil by us); but if there be any ignorant, or unintelligent, or uninstructed, or foolish persons, let them come with confidence....(as quoted by Origen. SOURCE)

Man I wish that I had that quote hotlinked to one of the function keys on my keyboard.

If all you want to talk about is little Johnny going around the merry go round, I will recommend the same to you that I would recommend to a child coming into a chemistry meeting and demanding everyone stop what they are doing and tell him how many lollipops he can stick to his forehead: "Can you go and find mommy and daddy so they can take you back to the playground?"

Well AV has been quick to remind us atheists who have read the bible that just reading it doesn't make us an expert on it, especially when we disagree with his exegesis and apologetics. Regardless of our extensive time spent as religious people, or reading history of the faith and religous thought.

But we are expected to cut him some slack when he complains about science he doesn't understand.

It's only fair.

[bible]Luke 6:31[/bible]

I don't think AV ever asked you to "cut him some slack". And it is not our fault that you can't understand the scriptures. It is yours. You must be born again. Look at the same scripture from 3 different translations.

1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.

1Co 2:14 Whoever does not have the Spirit CANNOT receive the gifts that come from God's Spirit. Such a person really does not understand them, and they seem to be nonsense, because their value can be judged only on a spiritual basis.

1Co 2:14 A person who isn't spiritual doesn't accept the teachings of God's Spirit. He thinks they're nonsense. He can't understand them because a person must be spiritual to evaluate them.

It says, "he CAN'T understand them" he "must be SPIRITUAL to evaluate them"!

I repeat, "he CAN'T understand them" he "must be SPIRITUAL to evaluate them"!!!

We are only telling you what God's word says and it's by your own admittance that we draw our conclusions that you fit what the scriptures says.

You can't understand the scriptures because you are not spiritual ... your not born again!

That is obvious because of what the first part of that same scripture says,

"A person who isn't spiritual doesn't accept the teachings of God's Spirit".

  • You don't accept the teachings of the Spirit of God.
  • You don't accept God's word.
  • You don't even believe in God.
  • So the obvious deduction is that you, that's right YOU, cannot UNDERSTAND the Bible which is the Word of God!

I'll try one more time to add some credibility with this thread, before I gladly checkmark it into infinity:

How many times has Zircon gone around the sun?
How old is the earth?
How old is the universe?

Three amazingly-easy questions.

That won't get you into heaven and neither will Celsus. You need to get rid of the bitterness in your heart and turn to God and repent. That's what's going to do it for you.

How many times has Zircon gone around the sun?
Depends on when it was formed. Some from Australia has been dated to 4.5 billion years old.
How old is the earth?
Roughly 4.5 billion years old.
How old is the universe?
Roughly 13.7 billion years old.
Three amazingly-easy questions.
I have a feeling that you won't accept any of our answers though.

How long is a piece of string? I assume that you mean the oldest found zircon, which is 4.4 billion years old.

How old is the earth?
4.54 billion years, give or take a few millions.

How old is the universe?
13.7 billion years, give or take 200 million years.

The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

This is always the argument. You've been given understanding that I can't have. Yet your book claims that it's understandable even to the "simple".

Here's the thing. Your god has to exist first. I see no reason to believe that this is so. Therefore you have no special knowledge, no magical revelations. You're just a man who has managed to delude himself more than the usual.

These rocks with their isotopic clocks reset, did they go around the sun 4.55 billion times?

In many cases, no. When you turn a rock into lava it is no longer a rock. When it resolidifies it is a new rock, complete with a new reset isotopic clock. In other cases the rock is heated to the point that it releases either the parent or daughter isotope. When it cools it's clock starts anew.

It is not completely accurate to say that radiometric dating actually dates the rock. It tells us how long a rock has been around in a specific state.

Of course, not all rocks cool quickly. Some are trapped deep in the earth and cool slowly, such as granites. Within these granites are different types of crystals. Each crystal forms at specific temperatures and each type of crystal has a different closure temperature which is known directly from lab experiments. Therefore, not all crystals in the granite will date to the same page. Even more interesting is that these dates can tell you the HISTORY of the rock. That is, it can tell you how long it took for the rock to cool. Here is one example

carvoo11.jpg

source

This piece of granite shows a specific history of cooling as measured by radiometric dating.

Would God implant this fake history into granites, like a bellybutton on Adam?

Yes, sir, I meant the oldest --- how many times please, has it gone around the sun?

If it went around the sun --- by itself --- then I submit it wasn't the earth.

If it went around the sun on a whole planet, where are the other artifacts that should be just as old?

Oh that's right --- their ages have been "reset" --- therefore they are now younger than the earth.

I think I'll reset my watch, I need to start feeling younger.

I don't have a problem with that definition. In fact, I believe they're saying now that pulsars are even more accurate than that.

So to take my point to the next level, please explain how a rock can be measured to [only] be 50 million years old, when it went around the sun with the earth 4.55 billion times?

Because that age is the age since some significant event happened during the process of the rock's formation (e.g. gases stopped escaping from it) The rock has existed for 50 million years. Before that it was lava, not rock, and before that it was goodness knows what.

And for that matter [no pun intended], how can the earth itself be [only] 4.55 billion years old, when there are things out there supposedly older?

Can the earth have two different ages, as my bicycle example clearly shows?

No. The earth is 4.55 billion years old. You might wish to make the distinction that the atoms that make the earth up are a few billion years older, and the nucleons and electrons a few billion older still. But the earth didn't exist before 4.55 billion years ago, so it's 4.55 billion years old.

Your bicycle example was flawed because you implied that, looking at the earth, we found that the components were old, although the earth was young. That doesn't work because the components were still old which means that they have existed for too long. Plus, the way we date rocks means that the internal "clock" would be reset by the earth being formed.

So no, it didn't make sense to say the bicycle was old - the bicycle was new, but the parts were old. The earth is old, and some of its parts are new, some are old.

Well if you don't like a little edu-ma-cation then just ignore it. You seem to have done so with evolution so far, so I'm sure you can ignore a little more.
