• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is coming from the other side of the fence, but a lot probably applies.

I hate converts -- and I am one - http://www.beliefnet.com/story/198/story_19843_1.html

I can certainly see, have been there myself, the issues of convert zeal. However, I think trying to cast all aspects of what you might call convert rigor as convert zeal is a somewhat poor way to dodge the fact that many craddle this and craddle that's are in fact ignorant of their faith.

I think part of the Article is an exaggeration meant to emphasize certain behaviors of some converts (Some NOT all). And of course there is some ignorance on the part of many cradles including myself. In any scenario there are always problems on both sides of the spectrum.

PS. Why "Cradle This and cradle that's" instead of just cradles? Just curious

I've come to the conclusion that most of the problems boil down to theological method--but not Truth. The Eastern theological method simply doesn't take things to their logicial conclusions--I'm not saying this is a bad thing--it's just a different approach. Plus, Latin theology can be more complex and nuanced. It's why you guys think we're bigger heretics than we think you are. It's why the Eastern Catholic Churches are pretty much identical to the Orthodox in theology and yet are fully in Communion with the Latin Church. It's why there tends to be more optimism for reunion on our side. We believe there are different ways to express then same Truth--no offense, but the East seems very quick to dismiss anything Western. I also think that there are still flat out misunderstandings as well. I don't know how many times I've seen an Orthodox person say we believe in the protestant notion of penal substitution or a Catholic person say the Orthodox doctrine of economia is some sort of system of subjective morality.

There have been a couple occasions where we have gotten together again in council to iron these things out and we did successfully only to have the more fundamentalist populations pull us apart again. Usually I am of the opinion that ecumenical dialogue is fruitless, but I do think that in the case of Catholicism and Orthdoxy it can be very helpful.
