Worship in 3-D

Have you read the Flat Stanley books?

Have you ever heard of him?

Well, he’s this funny little guy who is completely flat – there is no depth to him at all. In fact, he is so flat he can be mailed in an envelope like a letter.

While studying worship this week, God convicted me that my worship is often just as flat as Flat Stanley. When I say ‘flat’ I don’t mean boring, but rather that my worship is lacking depth.

What do I mean by depth?

Jesus instructed his disciples to “love the Lord God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.” Matthew 22:37
Since worship is an act of love, I would argue that our worship should be done “with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind.” Let me elaborate a bit …
God wants us to worship in 3-D:

1. Worship “with all your heart.”
Our heart’s desire should be to glorify Him and show our love to Him. This is the zeal and passion that drives us to worship him. Our heart compels us to want to spend time with Him.
2. Worship “with all your soul.”
God made us spiritual beings and there is a part of loving and worshipping Him that comes from neither our hearts nor our minds. It comes from Him. It is that part of us that cannot be examined or fully understood.
3. Worship “with all your mind.”
Through knowledge of His word and His truth, we are able to love and worship Him with devotion. The more we understand about Him, the more we are compelled to worship Him.

If I only worship God with one of these elements, I am flat. And God wants all of me! Not just my mind, not just my heart and not just my soul. He wants it all!
If you and I were to worship God with all three dimensions …

  1. Would we care what others thought of our worship style?
  2. Would we stand with our hands folded while worshipping in song?
  3. Would we simply bookend our day with Him, saying morning and evening prayers?
  4. Would our lives as we know them change?
  5. Would we be compelled to do the impossible in His name?

You and I both know that we won’t know perfect worship until we get to heaven.
But between now and then, we are being refined and strengthened. We won’t attain perfection today, but you and I can offer worship that is dynamic … worship that is life changing … worship that is contagious … worship that is 3-D.

Thankfully God doesn’t need 3-D glasses to take it all in, but others might.
