Sitting here tonight it's very easy to understand how widows of 3rd world cultures feel when they throw themselves on their husband's funeral pyre. their prospects aren't much different than mine.
there is so little that has changed for widows from the days of Ruth until now.
Somehow we believe that having something like Social Security would be enough to take care of people into their old age. At least that's how it was supposed to be. Now what we get from Social Security each month is less than what a person gets from a minimum wage job.
As it turns out Social Security will pay for either housing, or food, or medical care.
So we can have an apartment with heat, sewer and trash service, and electricity--but nothing else.
Or we could have money for food and clothing--but nothing else.
Or we could have money for a day of emergency care in a hospital; but nothing else.
nope not much difference between here and any 3rd world country.
