So-called "real" feminists want the term to be taken seriously. Someone from another social medium of mine, wrote a piece about how feminism is not about women being greater than men, but it is about gender equality.
The problem with the term "feminism" is that it doesn't imply a meaning of "gender equality". It has a biased view point right in the name: female. If you want a term that implies gender equality... use the term gender equality, or another made-up term for it. But feminism has come a long way as a process of women becoming "equal" (yeah right... what a lot of feminists want is not equality, but dominance) to men. The word itself has nothing to do with men and men's equality to women, but rather women's equality to men in a unilateral direction.
The word contains a negative connotation for me, and most likely always will. It is irredeemable in my mind because of it's history: Women, not men, who have taken it and ran with it. Every single outspoken feminist I've ever known, or to whom I even associate the term "feminist", has had nothing but trash-talk to say about men and their position in society.
Sure, some feminists are out to be "equal", but the fact is that the term has been tainted too long with a history of women wanting to hurt men in some fundamental way. And vengeance ? Is not gender equality.
Gender equality is fine by me.. but if we want that policy to catch on in the long-term, it's probably a failed cause from the start to use the term "feminism" to equate! Because the terminology itself is biased in nature by the very word that it uses, and needs to go.
I still maintain to thise day that I can't stand feminism...
... but I'm all for gender equality.
On a side note... if men started using the term "masculism" or "menism" for "gender equality"? They'd be laughed at! -- But, you can't pick a part the term Feminism without feminists breathing down your neck about it. That in and of itself is gender equality, and a double standard! You might not like to acknowledge it, but it's still a hardcore reality.
Other things that come to mind... is our incessant need to be "politically correct" these days. We can't say "Sally is the Chairman" -- we are now forced to say "Sally is the Chairperson [Or Chairwoman]". We are now re-arranging terms for the sake of not just political-correct agendas, but in this case a feminist-persuaded politically correct agenda.
Think about the above example for a moment... Chairman. Man in this sense cannot represent both man and woman, according to feminism and/or the politically-correct regime. So man, is only equal to man. It can't be both, even though the freaking word "woman" has "man" right in it. All right, whatever you like ...
... so then why do I have to accept the word "feminism" to mean "gender equality"?
I don't. Because feminism is about women, and men get the short end of the stick on that agenda. They haven't gotten there yet, but it has been progressing that way for a good number of years now, driven by women who not only want equality.. but they want to see men suffer like "they" have (they haven't really suffered at all, but their "ancestors" did *eye roll*).
