Testimony
I was born Susan Jane Thorn, December 31, 1949, to my parents Hugh Evan and Dorothy E. Thorn, in Akron, Ohio (USA). I was in the middle of their five children. I had two older brothers and two younger sisters. I was not an outgoing child. I was fairly quiet and reserved. I had a few close friends. In my first 22 years of life I lived in 11 different houses, all in the Akron area, and I attended six different schools. I had a learning disability, with poor reading comprehension, so in school I did not do very well scholastically.
I believed in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of my life at age 7, at summer camp, and it was my goal and purpose to live for the Lord from that moment forward. And that has been a lifetime process, which has had its ups and downs. I got rejected a lot throughout my life, mostly from people who misjudged me and who did not understand me, or who did not share with me in the same faith and convictions, even though many of them professed faith in Jesus, too. But in all of this God was getting me ready.
I was a singer, and I majored in music and voice in college. I sang in choirs and ensembles and quartets, trios, and duets, and I sang solos. And I used the gift of music throughout my life in ministry for my Lord. I also began teaching the Scriptures at age 16, mostly to children and women, and now on the internet for the past 20 years via my times of personal devotions with my Lord each day, which I then share with the world on the internet, as called of God to do this 21 years ago. And I have been faithful to that call.
I met my husband Rick at the University of Akron, in the music department. We began dating seriously in February of 1971 and we were married in August of 1972 (it will be 53 years for us this August). We have four grown children, 3 children-in-law, 14 grandchildren, two grandchildren-in-law, and one great-grandchild. We all live in South Carolina (USA). It is nice to have our family close by so that we can have time with them frequently, though the ones further away we see less often. I love my family dearly!
Somewhere, about half way through my marriage, I had a period of time of moral failure, on and off. I had gone through so much suffering in my life, at the hands of other people, and I just got to the point where I gave up, and I gave in. I caved to the flesh and I did not obey God, in practice. But then the Lord brought me to the point of repentance (again), and he has sustained me in my walk of faith in obedience to him. And 21 years ago he called me to this ministry of writing my devotions and posting them on the internet.
So, why am I telling you all of this? The Lord led me to do this, first of all, and because there are other Christians out there who have wandered from the faith, and who have fallen back into sin, and who need to be revived and brought back to obedient walks of faith in the Lord Jesus. And so this is an encouragement that, by the grace of God, if we are willing and obedient, no matter where we have been, or what we have done, God can revive us. He can bring us back, and he can still use us in ministry, if we will let him.
Regardless of the fact that I had that time of failure, where I was not obeying the Lord as I had once obeyed him, he loved me enough to forgive me, to restore me, and then to call me to this present ministry of writing out what he is teaching me from his word each day and to posting these writings on various websites on the internet. And he is leading me to share with you where these writings and songs and video talk devotions can be found on the internet, for the sake of accountability, and in case you are interested.
It Is No Secret What God Can Do
By Stuart Hamblen
The chimes of time ring out the news
Another day is through
Someone slipped and fell
Was that someone you?
You may have longed for added strength
Your courage to renew
Do not be disheartened
I have news for you
There is no night, for in His light
You'll never walk alone
You'll always feel at home wherever you may roam
There is no power can conquer you
While God is on your side
Take Him at His promise
Don't run away and hide
It is no secret what God can do
What he has done for others
He'll do for you
With arms wide open
He'll pardon you
It is no secret what God can do...
