Luke 21:34-36
Watch Yourselves
“But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” (ESV)
The NLT puts it this way:
34 “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware, 35 like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. 36 Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”
I can certainly attest to the fact that carousing and drunkenness dulls one - as I did in my early twenties. I look back on that now and wonder what insanity I was pursuing.
Many things can divert us from the Lord. We must remember him at all times and not be taken by "dissipation". The future is unknown, but we do know one thing, that it will hold traps. I do not advocate cutting oneself off from the rest of the world, but I do agree with our Lord that we must be alert. There are so many diversions in the modern world, we can sometimes be swept up without realizing it, if we are not careful. May our great God grant us the fortitude and wisdom to remain on guard against the snares of the world. Amen.
