There is one reason the Kingdom has been subdued for centuries and that is simply because of the hypocrisy of this world and religion that it would put on display. Roughly 1700 years ago the predominantly gentile religion broadsided Jesus, His Gospel, and of course the Kingdom in order to realign itself with the world and institutions of man. The result was to build an institution of their own modelled upon the institutions of man and not upon the Kingdom.
It sought the same things the other institutions of man sought, material wealth and power. In doing so it rejected the counter-culture of the Kingdom and made the whole thing over in man's image instead of God's. Every offshoot denomination of that treacherous act, mainly by way of tradition as time progressed, has followed that same wide path back into the world of man. People have lost sight of the counter-culture of the Kingdom which Jesus taught, and have reverted to the governance of man instead of the governance of the Father.
As a result Rome which once saw Christianity as rebellious for living and promoting a way of life contrary to the self serving ways of man, now worked hand in hand with it in partnership, just as politicians work with religions today to bolster each others power. Of course the goal was to further the world of man rather than submitting themselves to the Kingdom/governance of God. Guess which institution changed in order to do so thus joining the other. Ways contrary to the traditional ways of man were lost, both to man's empires and the church/religion, but remains in the scriptural teachings of Jesus.
