To Keep You From Evil

“For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light;
And reproofs for discipline are the way of life
To keep you from the evil woman,
From the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
Nor let her capture you with her eyelids.
For on account of a harlot one is reduced to a loaf of bread,
And an adulteress hunts for the precious life.”
“The one who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense;
He who would destroy himself does it.” (Proverbs 6:23-26,32 NASB1995)

“The evil woman” or “the harlot” or “the adulteress” does not have to be a woman or even another human. It can be anyone or anything which tempts and which leads people into any kind of sin. It could even be the ones being tempted to sin enticing themselves. And the adultery could be with their own selves, too. For some people create scenarios in their own minds and then act on them without any outside influences. They are their own worst enemy with no one else to blame but themselves for giving way to temptation.

So, what’s the solution? By faith in Jesus Christ we must repent of (turn away from) sinful lifestyles to now walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands. We must surrender our lives to the Lord to walk in his ways and in his truth and in his righteousness, in the power of God, for the glory of God. By the grace of God we must be led by the Spirit and by the teachings of the Scriptures in how we are to live as those who profess faith in Jesus Christ. And we must be self-disciplined people who obey God in practice.

If we are not those whose lives are surrendered to the Lord, who are committed to following Jesus with our lives in submission to the will and purpose of God for our lives, but if we are people who take Christianity more lightly, and for whom God is more of an afterthought, who see obedience to God’s commands unnecessary or not required or optional, at best, then we will be ripe for falling into temptation to sin. For if God is not LORD of our lives, and we see his commands as optional, what’s to keep us from sin?

So, first of all we must deny self, die to sin, and follow Jesus in his ways. The Word of God must be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path guiding and directing us in the way we should go, and warning us against the wrong way. We must be committed to the Lord, to obeying him, to living for him, and to no longer making sin our practice. We must be those who are being guided by the Holy Spirit, living within us, who are resisting the devil, and fleeing temptation, and who are drawing near to God in full biblical faith.

For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

So, believe God’s word! Do what he says to do. And do not do what is evil.

My Sheep

My sheep hear me. They know me.
They listen to my voice and obey.
I call them and lead them.
They know my voice, so they follow me.
They will never follow strangers.
They will run away from them.
The voice of a stranger they know not;
They do not follow him.

So, I tell you the truth that
I am the gate, so you enter in.
Whoever does enter
Will find forgiveness and will be saved.
Nonetheless whoever enters
Not by the gate; other way,
He is the thief and a robber.
Listen not, the sheep to him.

Oh, I am the Good Shepherd,
Who laid his own life down for the sheep.
I know them. They know me.
They will live with me eternally.
The thief only comes to steal and
Kill and to destroy the church.
I have come to give you life that
You may have it to the full…

They know my voice, so they follow me.
