The idea that relationships should be based on trust always struck me as unrealistic. I think it may even be idolatrous. "Cursed is he who trusts in man." - Jeremiah 17. Thus says the God who loves those He cannot trust.
I don't demand that someone earn my trust before I extend compassion. I don't demand that people put absolute trust in me. All relationships are risk. You can manage risk, but you can never eliminate it.
Perhaps the reason that marriages fail is that our expectations of them are unrealistic. Perhaps it's the same with friendships and with religious organizations and with political movements, Only God merits absolute trust, and no one else. But only God needs to be trusted absolutely. So we can have other relationships so long as we keep perspective.
We can never fully belong anywhere but in Heaven. Earth is temporary, and everything in the world is unstable. So don't take it too seriously. But do make an effort. No pressure. Just try. Only reject those who won't even try - for their hearts are dead and you can do nothing for them.
