From beginning to end in the Bible God tells us to put His will ahead of our own. For instance, would self harm or harming others be our own will or His? Man was placed in this world outside the Garden to understand the repercussions of putting our will ahead of His (as Eve and Adam had done). Done in order to experience how our self centeredness can hurt and oppress others, or more evident, how others doing so can hurt us. Quite often coming to that realization of how His will is superior to ours in a world of self interest lightens our burdens, as we have chosen to follow the ways of God rather than the ways of man. Caring for others in times of need as one would hope self would be cared for as His will commands may not change the world from a single person's perspective, but it can improve immediate surroundings and perhaps it will play itself forward, that is until it runs into self interest once again. But even our enemies can find no threat in those who remove a thorn from their paw. They may even as a result feel uncomfortable in having taken advantage, and that could open further doors in their own lives.
