I am a newly confirmed Christian with a strong interest in science and space exploration. It is my belief that God put us here to explore the created order and to spread life, both physical and spiritual, throughout the universe.
For instance, Holy Communion was conducted on the Moon shortly after landing and Apollo 8 broadcast the reading of Genesis as it orbited the lunar globe. So it could be said that we have made a start.
The universe has so far proved to be hostile to life. We are the only species on Earth
with the capacity to reach other celestial objects and our technology, which taps the natural world that God has given us, is making it ever more feasible that some day we will be able to colonise other worlds and give them biospheres.
God has placed us in an unimaginably large and complex cosmos. It is difficult to believe that it is not a gift and a mission. To stay earthbound is, to me, like refusing a gift.
How do others feel about this?
