Jesus can forgive all sins, right? There is no unforgivable sin, right?
This is almost a trick question. If any sin has bothered your conscience enough that you seek forgiveness, then you have not committed the unforgivable sin. That’s right, there is an unforgivable sin.
Let’s look at Matthew 7 - 31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
So, whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, will not be forgiven, in this life, or the afterlife. What does this mean? To understand what Jesus is saying here, we really need to understand one of the functions of the Holy Spirit. John 16:8 says -And when he (The Holy Spirit) is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. We see here that the Holy Spirit reproves the world of sin. In every person’s life, at some point, they will realize they are a sinner through the work of the Holy Spirit. They will have to decide to ask Jesus to save them from their sins, or ignore the Holy Spirit telling them they need a Savior. Those that pass away from this life without Jesus as their Savior, will never have forgiveness in the afterlife.
But, Matthew 12:32 also says “in this age”, which means a person can face un-forgiveness for rejecting the Holy Spirit, while still alive. How is that possible? To understand this, one needs to understand sin, and how sin works. The first time a person lies, they feel guilty. The next time, less guilty. After many, many lies, the heart is so hardened that lying no longer bothers the sinner. Any sin, the more it is practiced, the harder the person gets to that sin. Eventually, they feel no guilt toward that sin.
Rejecting the Holy Spirit’s conviction of sin, is a sin. Every time a person rejects the need for Jesus as their Savior, they sin. Eventually, they get so hardened to this sin, that they no longer hear the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit conviction of sin, a person will never come to a saving knowledge of Christ.
Most pastors would agree, the hardest people to reach, are the lost that seat in the pew every Sunday. The raise their hands, sing, do everything on the outside that says religion, but on the inside, they want nothing to do with Jesus. They have heard the saving gospel so often, and rejected it so often, that they are hardened and deaf to God and his plan of Salvation. If you read this, and feel the guilt of your sin, and know you are not saved, then you are not past hope. Give your life to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. 1Corinthians 13: 3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
