We had a lesson today on the power of Christ's blood. The premise being that His blood reached back under the Law as a substitute for their sins. I want to believe it but I don't understand how it could work.
1. Christ offered His blood under the New Covenant and is specifically forbidden by the Moscial Covenant from offering sacrifices under that covenant. So, He couldn't have offered His blood under the Law. The Levites couldn't have offered His blood either.
2. Hebrews 10 was used as the premise for this argument but there are other explanations for these verses. The cleansing laws were onerous and had to be repeated on various schedules. Christ took away theses laws. I have no guilt if I eat a ham sandwich. My conscious is clear. I don't have to worry about celebrating Passover. If I sin unintentionally, according to the Law, there are no consequences and no guilt because Christ has taken away the Law for these type of sins.
3. Christ didn't take away God's morale laws. They have and will continue to exist until judgement. It is still a sin to lie, steal, murder, etc. In many cases under the Law there were no sacrificial provisions for international sins. You were solely at the mercy of God. That changed in the New Testament. Even so, I still feel guilty when I sin.
4. The argument was made that Christ is our substitute. But the argument under the Law was a substitute for a substitute. On its face it seems illogical.
Well this is a start for my first blog.
